The glory of porridge (merged)

The ice man thread got me thinking about porridge. It's got to be the ultimate OS food, surely - cheap, quick, healthy and incredibly versatile...

I make mine with about 1/3 semi skimmed milk, 2/3 water. I eat it with maple syrup which is a bit of an extravagance but fully justified on taste grounds (I gather it's very cheap in Canada, so next time one of my friends goes there I'll have to get them to bring me back a caseful). Sometimes I add sliced banana or sultanas. Yum yum yum. :D

And competitionscafe has sorghum porridge

How do you eat yours?

  • Water with a pinch of salt in the cooking. Then a dash of milk and a sprinkle of sugar on top.

My son likes it made with milk and fruit. Usually apple and raisin or pear but he also likes dessicated coconut in it.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • Ooh I love porridge too! Big Yum :rotfl: I like mine made like yours with about 2/3 water 1/3 milk, a sprinkling of low sugar on top and with either raspberries or blueberries on top. Raspberries are my favourite but obviously they're a bit scarce in winter (or wayyyy too expensive and tasteless) so sometimes I stew an apple with cinnamon and have a couple of spoonfuls of that on top.

    Roll on winter breakfasts!!! :D
  • Health Benefits Oat WHF Don't forget if you haven't time to cook your porridge you can eat oats cold with milk and fruit.

  • Has anybody had those breakfast oats from Aldi, it is like a fine powder and when you get it out of the packet it goes everywhere, it looks like dandruff....it tastes nice though and I only use milk and water....yummy. 1a_y_grin.gif

Maltabella it's called - needs a bit too much sugar to make it nice though - apart from Oats, my favourite is Creamy Meal (maize porridge)

As for porridge oats - my favourite method is: a grated apple, some chopped hazelnuts and a little drizzle of honey stirred into your hot porridge (and takes care of one of your 5 a day fruit and veg portions). Banana and honey or maple syrup is v. good too. I always add a wee bit of salt to the porridge when cooking them.

Of course some of the true Scots up here would be appalled at what this immigrant from down south does to one of their national dishes! :) I think the pukka Scottish porridge is just made with oats, water and salt, no?

  • I don't like the scottish way of making porridge either - bleurch.

I make mine 1 cup of oats to 2 cups milk (me - skimmed, boys have semi) add loads of sultanas and then lots of fruit on top. Esp love tinned prunes on top in winter and strawberries in summer :D

3 mins in the micro and voila :)
  • I eat it with maple syrup which is a bit of an extravagance

Absolutely delicious - how I have mine too. I find a bottle lasts a long time though, so it's not too expensive.

If I'm feeling really extravagant, then some single cream rounds it off nicely!

BTW I always use oatmeal, not the rolled oats. Takes longer, but I think its worth it.

    Regards,

    White.
