Charity Shops..

feel free to move if in wrong place..

I've always wanted to take a quick gander around charity shops but seeing as im only 19 i feel a bit young lol. Also there's the embarassement factor, is there any charity websites, where they sell stuff online? Sorry for being stupid ;) Thanks

** Also whats the best bargains you've got in a charity shop? **

Why don't you just hop on a bus to another town where no one knows you then you can have a good old rummage! I always felt a bit self conscious too until we moved up north and I didn't know anyone now I'm a big fan and Oxfam in Blackpool is amazing!

The Old Style crowd are going to absolutely adore you cmjohnson! I'm a regular on the Old Style board, and many of my peers there swear by charity shops. Not everyone is middle-aged BTW, many are in their 20s!!

In my trawl of charity shops I have purchased lots of bargains. Eg I got a really nice 100% wool jumper still with tags on for £3.50....looked for it on the web and the "recommended retail price" (whatever that is?) came up at £55. I got some fairly up to date books, eg one of Dan Brown's for £1, a Jeremy Clarkson one (though it was cr*p) for £1. There is often a good choice of recipe type books - got a hardbacked copy of Delia Smith's Summer recipes for £3.50, looks like it had never been used. Most books I donate back once I've done with them.

I've also got a few bags - nice backpack style one, looks seriously like it has never been used, £3.50 - label was chopped off, often a sign that the manufactuer is snooty and a bit "sensitive" about their stuff appearing in charity shops.

That's all I can think of right now to be honest, but I have bought lots of good things from the charity shops even if it takes a while to go through the dross.

Lots of them sell brand new things, eg Oxfam - they usually have a nice range in cards, candles, kitchen paraphenalia and so on.

The embarrassment factor is in your own head - I think it's more shameful to waste a load of money on overpriced brand new rubbish. BTW it's not unknown for people to trawl charity shops to buy things to sell on in ebay at a higher price. If you must give an excuse for being seen in a charity shop then that could be it.

I buy most of my sons designer shirts and designer jeans from charity shops, he doesn't know, I'm not telling him, I'm saving a fortune and he looks and feels good, lol. Get yourself into a charity shop, lol, bag a bargain save a fortune.

You get over the embarrassment factor, trust me - when I started going in I was mortified, now I couldn't care less.

They are not treasure troves unless you are prepared to dig about, though - IMO, there is a lot of stuff on the shelves than is too bobbly, stretched etc to be saleable, not to mention Primark type stuff that costs more 2nd hand than it does in Primark!

My best bargain, however, was a genuine Prada bag for 75p. Whenever I go into that shop I always check they haven't got another one!

My best buy was a new (still with tags) Ralph Lauren handbag for £7, that I later sold to my sister for £20!
