Terrible internet speeds - i think...

Options
Hello, hopefully somebody will be able to give me some advice as I'm not particularly technical.

My dad has an internet connection to TalkTalk and having run the testyourbroadbandspeedchecker (or something like that) he is getting download speeds of 500 (i.e below 1mb) which doesnt sound the best to me.

However, my speeds are even worse as I am upstairs in my room and only have a wireless dongle. The speed in the bottom right hand corner of the computer says 54.0 Mbps and on testyourbroadbandspeedchecker i got a speed of 250-300.

My questions are -

1) Should my dad be getting speeds greater than 500?

2) Should I be getting speeds greater than 250-300?

3) What are my options to improve me speeds in my room?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

James

Hi, the first thing to get out of the way is the 54mbps that you are seeing on your computer, that is the speed of the link between you and the wireless router, not your line speed.
There are many reasons why your line speed is what it is, distance from the exchange, noise on the line, poor internal phone wiring etc..
The first thing to do is establish at what speed your router is synchronising with the exchange.
To do this you need to be able to log into the router and look for the router statistics.
Have a look here to find out how:-
    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

Then if you can plug the router into your Master test socket, you will have to remove the faceplate off the master socket to find this as shown below.

When you have done that post the results, what we are looking for is something like this but it depends on the manufacturer of the router.

    Hope this helps.

  • We do not have a test socket although we have unplugged+unwired all the other phone lines from the house and are just using the one socket closest to the door (which has the main feed cable coming in).

I have copied and pasted the values from the Router and then run a internet speed test using 'Broadband Speed Test'. The result are as follows:

Do these look right or are they slow (as i suspect)?

Attenuation is quite high there. How far are you from your exchange? Is your router plugged into the Master Socket during normal operation, or by an extension?

  • I understand that the exchange is in Ashby De La Zouch (around 1.5 miles away) - is that far? How do i find out for certain?

The downstairs computer and router is set up and is linked to the main telephone socket (no extension cable). We have diconnected and dis-wired all the other telephones in the house and are just operating this one telephone socket. However, the main socket does not have a test socket as per many other houses.

    What does attenuation mean?

use samknows.com to find the exchange address/location. Then Google Maps to get get the distance from your postcode. 1.5 miles is quite near and should, in theory, give you better speeds than you are reporting.
Before you do anything else I would change the ADSL filter on your phone socket to see if that makes any difference.

What macman said. I'm 2.5 miles from the exchange and sync up at around 3-4mbit/s download and 900kbit/s upload, from an extension!

Do you have a microfilter in each phone socket?
  • I am 2.2 kilometres from the exchange.

The microfilter is a new one and has improved speeds but the figures quoted are using the new microfilter.

We do have microfilters in each phone socket but as I have tried to explain we have unwired all the other phones in the house to try and narrow down the problem.

When you say "I sync up at around 3-4mbit/s" - is that from running internet speed checkers or is there a more sophisticated way to measure speeds?

Attenuation is measured in decibels, it is a measurement of loss.
The higher the value the greater the loss.
In your case the figure is 41 db, which suggests you should be getting around 8mbps.
In fact your download sync speed is 5.978mbps
Your noise margin is around 11 db which suggests that your line may have been capped. If you listen to your phone line do you hear any pops and crackles?

Unplug any extention phones, extention cables, answer machines or fax (anything except the phone you will use to do the test!).

Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT master socket.

Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. If there is noise on the line, make sure it's not your phones connection to the socket (wiggle it about a bit) and that you are using the master socket. If you are sure its the line making the noise then dial BT (or WorldOnline) and report the fault, they should be able to sort it out. Remember that 'mis-reporting' a fault (e.g. if it turns out to be your phone, extention cord etc.) may be charged a call-out fee by BT (/WOL).
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I rang the number and it said this circuit is....then told me my phone number and cut off. I presume this is because we dont have a BT line - think its provided by Talktalk. Is there a separate number for non-bt lines?

Not really sure whether to go from here? Has the fact that I dont have a test socket behind my master socket have any bearing on it or maybe my filters arent good quality ones?
