Got a faulty JVC camcorder? See if it qualifies for free repair even without warranty

What's this all about?
If you've got a JVC camcorder, even if its out of warranty, you may be able to get it repaired for free.
Why?
JVC's issued a notice to customers that many of its camcorders have developed a CCD image sensor failure. Symptoms of this fault include - while in the camera mode - no picture displayed, a distorted picture and/or a display "LENS CAP" even though the lens cap is removed.
The fix for this is having the CCD replaced and JVC has said it'll cover the cost for this, even for camcorders out of warranty, provided contact is made with it by 1 October 2007.
53 camcorder models (13 VHS-C and 40 DVC), with a possible manufacture period of 2004-2006, are reported to have these faults, so if you own a JVC camcorder, now's the time to check it's in working order and doesn't display these symptoms.
What models have been affected?
You can check if your model's been listed on the JVC website.
What to do
If your model's listed and is showing signs of this fault:
If your model's listed but doesn't have this problem, remember you've until 1 October to contact JVC if the fault does occur. Non-faulty camcorders, even if a listed model, will not be exchanged.
For any questions or assistance in obtaining a free repair, give JVC a call: 0870-330-5000.

What to do
If your model's listed and is showing signs of this fault:
- If you're in warranty: Take it back to the retailer who'll arrange a repair under the conditions of the warranty.
- If it's outside of warranty: Contact JVC as soon as possible. Write a covering letter to the following address, enclosing a copy of the purchase receipt (bank or credit cards statements will be accepted). Don't send your camera at this point; you'll be advised about how and when the repair will be carried out at a later date.

In regards to above I found the local rate number for JVC customer services(thanks to saynoto0870.com), its 0208 208 7654, instead of the 0870 number."He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

Some Sony products have also had CCD problems. They will also replace the CCD free of charge on selected models. Affected cameras/camcorders are in the DSR, CVX, DSC, MVC, CCD and DCR range (see here for more details).
From the above link:Thank you for your support and patronage of Sony products.
It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of products that incorporate an image sensor device, CCD Chip, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition:
When the product is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder will show either a distorted image or no image.
We have determined that this condition only occurs to a limited number of units.
In its effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony has elected to offer a free repair to the owners of applicable products if one of the above-mentioned conditions is caused by the image sensor device, CCD chip.
I got my Sony DSC-U30 repaired for free over a year after the warranty had expired - I rang them up to get an returns reference number, sent it off and had it back by the following week. Shame I only found out about it after I'd bought a new camera...-- £2 coin savers club = £90 (£84 banked) --0 -
I had the problem described with my camcorder and had this out of warranty repair carried out free of charge. Because this is a very widespread issue, the turnaround is 2-3 weeks (in my experience) but courier pick up and return is also free of charge.
As a bonus, the man who repaired my camera also gave it a good clean internally removing the dust from the inside of the lens which had got in there somehow!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I also found out about this and got a repair when my digital camcorder went bits up just before xmas. Didn't get it back until New Year though.
Finding proof of purchase is the problem with this deal. I tend to keep a couple of years of bank statements etc. but tend to chuck stuff after a few years. Luckily I had stored the receipt in the box and left it in the loft in this case.Reading this signature is a waste of time0 -
I discovered this problem (lens cap) with my camcorder at Christmas and thought it was just mine - it's out of warranty so was just going to bite the bullet and get another one so this is great news - just got to try and find the receipt (think I scanned it) if not, will bank statement do (transaction will show more than just the cost of the camera)0

my camcorder did this recently and after an hour the picture came back on.
will contact jvc to have it repaired just in case it goes again.
ours had a warning lens cap was on and blank screen.
glad i checked the forums today0 -
I had one and it packed up exactly as described. Originally 299 pounds on special offer at Costco with a 50 pounds voucher, so I paid 249 pounds. This was July 2003.
When it went wrong in Jan 2007 I took it back to Costco and got full refund of 299 on the spot, no questions asked.
I'm glad it's finally come good no matter where you bought it but just wanted to say Costco absolutely rock.I ♥ MSE0
