Some older cannon camcorder also have this problem. I got one and got it repaired for free.

NOTE: Most of these camcorders are older usually 3 years or before, check forums to see what other people have repaired for free.

Hi all, apparently the error is due to a load of faulty Sony CCD's supplied to JVC, samsung etc.
Unfortunately JVC won't repair mine for free as I don't have the original receipt or warranty card. (they want £100 to fix it!)
Can they legally do this, as obviously the components were manufactured badly in the 1st place and therefore not of "merchantable quality"?
I will not be paying £100 to fix it, if i could get hold of a CCD i'd repair it myself!

Thanks SO much for this.:T My JVC packed up about 6 months ago with this problem - I was ready to bin it to be honest. I will be getting in touch.

Just to give this a bump and to let people know that I have had my camcorder repaired free of charge. It's back from repairers and working fine. I had this done even though I didn't have the receipt any more but I had to tell them when I bought it and where from which I was able to do.:T

Anyone had this (or similar) problems with a Samsung, and managed to get it repaired outside of warranty free of charge?

    Thanks

A quick bump on this as, via a helpful post from davilown (in the "In my home" forum) I'm now aware how widespread this issue has been.

Also to point out the date up to which faults can be reported has been extended until the end of December 2007 as per the instructions on the jvc website.

    QUOTE.....
    Q. Important Notice to Camcorder CustomersA. JVC has received reports that in certain circumstances, a small quantity of units of the models listed below, may, while in the camera mode, show no picture, a distorted picture and/or display "LENS CAP" even though the lens cap is removed. We have identified the cause as a failure of the CCD image sensor. Until 31st December 2007, JVC will cover the cost of repairs of units exhibiting these symptoms.

If your product is within the twelve month manufacturer's warranty, please return it to your retailer who will arrange a repair under the terms and conditions of the warranty.

If your product is outside warranty, please write to:

    JVC Consumer Support
    JVC UK Ltd
    14 Priestley Way
    London
    NW2 7BA

Please enclose a copy of your purchase receipt and warranty certificate. Please note that proof of purchase is required. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CAMERA DIRECTLY TO JVC. You should send ONLY your purchase receipt and warranty certificate with a covering letter. JVC will contact you to advise how the repair will be carried out.

Please call 0870-330-5000 if you need any assistance in obtaining a free repair. We apologise for any inconvenience and are appreciative of your understanding and support.

Hope thats useful for some one else.

  • Thanks for the information - I followed the link even though it seemed I'd missed the deadline, but the notice now says the deadline is December 31 - get in Quick!

May have saved me a shed load of cash, Thanks. :T

I could not find this page from ANYWHERE on the JVC site, so follow the link on Martins post.

Just wish Panasonic would do the same.
Came back from Disneyworld and although the camcorder recorded it would'nt play back and after contacting Panasonic they put me to their Service Centre.
They said they'd charge me £41 to look at it and then would depend on the problem as to how much to repair it.
Panasonic said that the MAY help although they would need to review this.
The camcorder was purchased at end of October 2005 and did'nt work in September 07. Was used approximately 8 times during that period!! Thats what gets me more.
If theres anyone who has any ideas then please feel free to contact me.

PS it cost me £350 in October 05 and as i cant find the receipt they dug their heels in a bit more. Iv contacted Currys and have to go to see if its on their system as i paid cash and it might not be although it is on Head office records.

  • Hi, does anybody know if I will still be able to get a free repair if I missed the deadline? I only just thought about looking for help with this problem on the internet, can't believe I've missed the date for free repairs by 2 weeks!!
  • Yipes, Just seen this, I have this camcorder with all the problems listed, wiil phone tomorrow.

If they have aknowledged an inherent problem with the camcorder as far as I am concerned they should repair this fault within 5 years.
