Main dealer rip off?

I would like to make a complaint to somebody but I do not know who?

Let me explain. Last week (Tuesday) I had two new tyres on my car from a 'well known' tyre and exhaust fitter. I also had the wheel alignment or tracking done at the same time. Exactly one week later I took my car into the main dealer for a minor service and its first MoT. One of the staff came out to me and told me that the tracking was "totally out" and it would cost me £60 for them to put it right otherwise it wear my tyres very quickly. Hang on, I had this done only one week, 7 days ago.

At this point I was understandably upset and a little angry. I declined their offer to do this work opting to return to the tyre and exhaust place to see what they had to say. At this stage bear in mind I have not 'kerbed' the tyres, I have not gone over any potholes and I have not gone over any speed humps fast. I can't, I have chronic arthritis and I have to be rather careful.

The tyre and exhaust place put the car on the lift straight away and fitted the wheel alignment equipment. The manager checked it over together with three other technicians. He then showed me exactly how it all worked (I actually know anyway) but suffice to say the tracking was not out at all!!!!

So, the main dealer wanted me to give them £60 for a none existent fault.

Who can I report this to please? I shall not be going back to this particular dealer by the way.

On a perfectly flat road, does the car drive straight if you let go of the wheel?
Is the wheel central when driving in a straight line?

You see, at tyre/exhaust places the staff can be lazy buggars and instead of doing a full adjustment, they adjust just one side of the car, which leaves the tell tale pulling to one side.

  • Last year I took my Ford into a main dealer for its annual service.
A few hours after dropping it off I had a phone call from the garage telling me that the front wiper blades were both split and needed replacing.
They would fit them for about £40 (parts only, no labour charge).

I told them to go ahead and fit the bits and also told them that when I collected the car, I would bring along the receipt for the wiper blades which I purchased from them about 3 weeks earlier as they were obviously faulty and should be replaced under guarantee.

When I arrived at the garage, I was told that the mechanic had taken another look at the wipers and after cleaning them up, decided that they didn't need to be replaced.
I asked the service manager how a pair of supposedly split rubbers repaired themselves once it was discovered that I would not have to pay for replacements, and he just kept repeating that they had cleaned up okay.

I also wrote to Ford UK about their self repairing wiper blades, but didn't get a reply.

Ok, no pulling to one side. I've driven along a straight road, hands off the wheel (no other traffic about of course) and the car was fine.

It's not Kwik Fit. I wouldn't go there anyway because of a previous rip off in the family.

I'm not going to name either the tyre and exhaust fitters or the make of my car. I shall contact the dealer and ask for them to comment further. One or the other is either lying or does not know how to use the equipment they have. If there is another explanation I would love to hear it.

It could be that the two tyres not replaced are worn slightly on one side and this is why they have told you the tracking is out.

Nope. The two rears are fine. I had the fronts renewed which are the ones that do need the tracking doing normally. The rears may need some adjustment sometimes but it's rare. It still remains that one set of 'experts' have either lied or told me incorrectly that the tracking is 'totally out'. Their words 'totally out'. So not just slightly.

Name the dealer - also did you receive a follow up customer satisfaction questionnaire or did the dealer opt you out of receiving that for your convenience...

I had two tyres fitted a few weeks ago and was told to have 4 wheel tracking done because the rears were wearing on the inside edge.
It must be something noticeable with the tyres for them to say it's out without putting the tracking gear on the car.
Is there any feathering of the tread on the rears.

No, they are very evenly worn :) I do keep an eye on my tyres and like to make sure they fully inflated and safe. I tend to be a bit OCD about checking them every week. It's how I am :)

If there's no sign of abnormal wear on the tyres I'd ask them why they think the tracking is " totally out ".
