You are sure about it? Octopus states if they decide the pipes need removal you pay.

I just checked for my property, which is with EDF and the Southern Gas Network, and the cost would be almost £1200

hi @tarajayne we're in a similar position (although our ASHP isn't yet installed!) and I want to stop paying the daily 30p standing charge for Gas when we've already disconnected the supply. Our supplier (Ecotricity) has said they'll charge £96 (ex vat) for the removal - I had already understood this was free from Octopus so I assumed it would be the case for all (dumb to make that assumption!)

Tbh I'm not fussed about the meter remaining in place for now, but I do not want to be paying £10 pcm for a standing charge when we're not even consuming gas from the grid.

The fact that our energy company won't remove the standing charge until the meter is removed, and they won't remove the meter without us paying a fee, makes zero sense and is simply unreasonable.

The fact that we're not able to switch energy companies right now makes this even worse.

Big picture, if we're trying to get off gas as a country, this has to be easier to do.

I've emailed Octopus to ask if they'll remove our meter even though we're not customers of them - I'll update here on how that goes!

The fact is that if they have to send out someone to remove the meter it's going to cost them money to do so, so they have a right to charge for that work.

Someone who used to post on here, posted what I said on Twitter some time ago as a Tip being as he used to work for Cadent

If you search gas meter removals on Twitter you will be hard pressed to find anyone who was charged for additional work, tip being not to ask for additional work to be carried out.

This is person I was referring to who gave Tip I mentioned - I havent got time to find his tweeted Tip

Gas meter removed by BG in Dec 2020. Cadent literally removed gas pipe on Monday last week. (Had a few phone calls 3 months ago from them in warm up to it). Paid nothing.

Cadent did exactly this for us post has meter removal. They contacted us. They removed the pipe. I paid nothing.

  • Somebody posted recently that Eon (or maybe Eon.next) will refund then cease your standing charge if you don't use any gas for a year.  It sounds to good to be true but you never know.
