Hi, hope someone can help me out! We need to use our other pc which is a few years old but uses xp and our current pc is about 10 years old and uses Windows 98 still, but we only have internet on the current one and need to transfer the internet service provider settings to the XP one. Any ideas?
We've had the family pc for nearly 10 years now, it's getting old and only works using Windows 98 and crashes a lot amongst other problems! We have a newer pc which has Windows XP on it, and we want to use that but it does not have our internet service provider software on there (and we've lost that cd) so we can't use the internet on it. We don't have wireless, we just use a broadband connection, but one using the phoneline and usb filters.. and you have to double click an icon on the desktop to turn it on.. it's not on constantly.
I think there is someway I can transfer these settings to the other pc without the isp software cd, by using the tcp/icp settings on the other pc. Am I right? That's what I've been told by someone I know who's an IT whizz.. but we only talk occasionally on msn so he can't come over to my house and sort it out! Just wondered if anyone knew how I could sort this out myself?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Many Thanks!!

been a while since I used dial-up so this might not work - on your Win98 pc, when connected to the net (or even when notconnected, just dbl click the internet explorer icon), the toolbar at the top should have "tools" listed, among file, edit, etc. go to "tools" then click on "internet options" - a box should appear with a bunch of headings at the top of it. click on "connections" and see if there's any info in the box for "dial-up and VPN settings". if there is, can you copy&paste that into this thread? its beena while since I used dial-up but you might just need to go into internet options on your XP PC and set-up a connection with the same info.
alternatively, try (on the XP PC) connecting it to the phoneline, etc., then go into "internet options" (as described above, but do it on your XP PC) go to "connections" and then click on the button saying "LAN Setitings" (its near the bottom ofthe box, then make sure the box saying "automatically detect settings" is checked. then close internet explorer and reopen.
if neither of these routes works, repost here and I/others will try to provide more assistance.

OP says they are on broadband, not dial-up.
You don't specifically say if your broadband router connects via USB but, if it does, you will need windows XP drivers for it.
Probably the easiest solution would be to contact your ISP via the support website, explain the problem and ask them to send you the correct CD. ISPs tend to be desperate to keep existing customers at the moment, so I doubt they will make it difficult for you!0 -
yea, but I wasn't sure about the whole using-phone-line-to-connect bit (I've only used cable modems and college intranet systems since uni) which is why I tought settings might be listed in the dial-up bit. I've only ever had to make sure the automatic detect settings bit was checked on pcs, and just plug modem in and switch on with macs.Win 2008 in 2008 member number.....237!!! Won so far: £0.00

I'd splash out on an adsl router, gives you much better protection, allows two pc's on at once, and then you don't have to worry about the software, it is all held in the router, you just need to tell it your username and password
Who is the ISP?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Most ISPs have the details needed to set up various routers/usb modems on their network and print them off.
One thing you definitely will need is the account name and p/w which the usb thing logs in with.
My advice to you is not to scrap/disassemble your old pc, but to put it to one side - should things not go too well.
2nd bit of advice: don't plug your usb thing into the xp box without first installing the drivers beforehand from the cd or better is to download them.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0
