    Don't get so worried, derrick.

The call lasts under a minute - and they are going to send a courier round with the free crumpets and butter.

Not worried, just pointing out to the uninitiated that 0845 are NOT "local rate", a point the Op made,( and some others who believe the hype of the telcos) ;)

  • I'm not exactly in a state of high dudgeon over this but, as the Op, I'd like to make it clear I never said that the call was local rate! ;)

The leaflet does make that claim though, which I assume Derrick would say was out of order, though they do quote the "5p per minute max from a BT line, other providers may vary" text.

If in doubt, use a relative's phone when they're not looking! :rotfl:

Apologies for crediting you with the claim that it was local rate, it was Poly_Pod in reply #14.

It would not only be me that "would say was out of order", the ASA would also, you could email the leaflet to them at;- new.complaint@asa.org.uk
where they will take it seriously and stop the company from making that claim, as you will be able to ascertain from the links in my post #38 above.

Stating "5p per minute max from a BT line, other providers may vary" is OK as far as the ASA is concerned, but the term "local rate" is not.

I should imagine that Kerrygold are fed up enough already (as their "locally delivered" leaflet has now become national thanks to the net) without pedants sending copies of it to the ASA because the call to arrange their van man to deliver free butter and free crumpets will cost the customer. (They did put on the leaflet that calls will cost 5p max per minute from a BT line, and other providers may vary - surely that is enough to satisy the ASA)

It's not as if they are trying to make money out of the deal - any revenue from the one call needed won't go far recompensing them for the fuel used up delivering your free goodies.

And what is the usual price for crumpet round your way, derrick?

    Haven't a clue, don't eat them.

As for the rest of your post, as I have explained I was just explaining to the uninitiated that 0845 are NOT local rate, and the ASA recommend people drawing their attention to companies that continue to call them so.

And "without pedants sending copies of it to the ASA", this will allow companies to continue to deceive the public.

All the public ask is that companies are honest, and calling 0845 "local rate" is dishonest.

As this thread is not about phone calls,( it has got sidetracked), I will not post any more on it and leave the readers to make up their own minds re ALL 0845 numbers being misleadingly described as "local rate"

If you need any more confirmation of it , then post on the phone boards, or got to the saynot0870 site.

As Quentin added this after my post;- (They did put on the leaflet that calls will cost 5p max per minute from a BT line, and other providers may vary - surely that is enough to satisy the ASA), I feel I need to comment.

If you look at the links in my post #38, in particular the one about Windsor Telecom, ( a quote from that page;- Because most UK callers now paid more for calls to 0845 numbers than for calls to geographic local destinations, we considered that the description "local rate numbers" for 0845 numbers was misleading and likely to confuse consumers.), you will see that it is not enough, although the wording is sufficient, they must not use the term "local rate"
I have spoken to ASA on several occasions and am told that any complaints re companies calling 0845 will be dealt with by "advising" them not to use the term.

I have received samples from Kerrygold before and I'm in Kent.

I've heard you can get a nice bit of crumpet in Essex without having to call Kerrygold up and request it! :D :rotfl: :rotfl:
  • Two crumpets and 2 small pats of butter arrived for me today - thanks once again OP!!!
