Remember last time this appeared - I doubted they would actually be able to do this due to delivery costs. I remember only certain people got it last time although I was suprised they were able to honor a offer like this having to delivery them fresh.0

There is no such thing as a "local call" these numbers are revenue sharing numbers
That is not correct. 0845 numbers are non geographic numbers charged at local rates. I have an 0845 number through my Orange Broadband connection. The cost of calling an 0845 number from a BT landline is the same price as a local call - a penny a minute off peak, 3.45 ppm peak. See

I had an email at work this week, saying that when 0870 numbers are discontinued (1st Feb 08), we should consider changing our number to an 0844 or 0845 number and the charge to the customer is 5p per min, with the revenue to the business being 2.2p per minute.
So it sounds like they're going to hike the cost of the 0844/5 numbers to compensate for the loss of income on 0870?
0870 numbers will cost the same as numbers starting 01 or 02, so not actually discontinued from 1/2/08, just no longer income generating.0 -

I don't know what you are reading , but from the page you linked to the charges are;_
Daytime, Mon-Sun 6am-6pm 0845;- 2p per minute
Evenings & night-time Mon-Sun before 6am and after 6pm 0845;- 0.05p per minute
It is an offence to call those numbers "local rate" as they are charged differently to 01/02 numbers
Try calling one from a mobile where they can cost up to 40p per minute, they are not include in any phone packages so you pay for them on top of any inclusive minutes.
Don't forget that 01/02 numbers on BT off peak cost 4.5p for up to 1 hour, an hours call on 0845 at off peak times would cost you 30p, a premium of 550%, (and that is what they actually are, premium rate numbers, BT class them as "special services numbers).
Have a look at this ASA page where it says;- "To avoid misleading consumers, marketers should not describe calls to those numbers as ‘local’ or ‘national’ respectively."
Also from here;- "The ASA has ruled that, to avoid misleading consumers, marketers should not describe calls to 084X or 087X numbers as “local” or “national” or similar: the ASA has upheld against the wording “Lo-call” (Emap Ltd, 6 April 2006)."
And from here;- " Marketers should not describe 084 and 087 numbers as ‘local’ or ‘national"
And from here, where the ASA upheld a complaint against Windsor Telecom;- "we told Windsor Telecom to stop describing 0845 numbers as "local rate" and to include a clarifying statement about the likely cost of the call"
This has been the case since July 2004, when BT scrapped the differential on call charges in relation to distance, i.e. it costs the same to call your next door neighbour as it does to phone from London to Glasgow.
If you need more clarification go to the phone board or to the "saynoto0870 site"Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

They are doing this so that the covert revenue sharing on these numbers will continue,a decent company will not use this type of number to con their callers, or at the very least they will inform them of the cost of the calls.
They are not hiking any call charges, in fact BT have recently reduced the cost of 0845 numbers during the day, but they have taken away the cheap weekend rate on 0845, and they will still cost you more than 01/02 if you have inclusive calls on your phone, as these numbers, 084/087, are never included.
0844 range from 1p-5p per minute on BT. by charging callers to call your business you are just ripping them off covertly, same as the doctors surgeries that are going onto 0844 and telling people," its only the cost of a local call", a complete and utter lie when the call charge is 5p per minute as against what could be as little as 5p for the whole call if using 1899,18866 or 18185, and 3.25p per minute if using BT for an 01/02 number, a 54% premium!
Lets us know the name of your company then I will know not to ever call them.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Most businesses use 0845 as a means of getting a non-geographical number. Until recently, these were non-profit generating, unlike 0870 or any 09xx number. It is still likely though that 99% of 0845 numbers are still non-profit generating (I don't see 1000s of businesses hiking up their prices overnight to generate more dosh!).SS Christmas Challenge: £109.900

0845 have always been revenue sharing, it might not be quite so as from September 1st when BT reduced the cost down to 2p per minute daytime Mon-Fri, and it was never as lucrative as 0870, but it still costs callers more to call them except for the few,( and I doubt there are many on this forum), who still use BT to make daytime calls, although even those on BT option 3 where all geo calls are included, they will still pay for 084/087 numbers.
Have a look HERE where you will see a comparison between different companies, then see if you are still of the opinion that they are "local rate", check out the payphone charges her they cost 11 times the amount of a geographical number.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
