Any advice on my mums problem that's just started with her Phillips lcd TV 23 inch bought in august 2008 so it's just about 3 years old.
Situation is, in the last 24 hours or so, the TV takes an age to power up [30 minutes]. It has a blinking green light till TV comes on then green power light stays on. If you turn TV off by plug or remote and leave it any length off time it takes ages again to power on. If you turn TV off for say 10 or so minutes then TV comes straight on.

Almost certainly power supply failure, and a good chance it's one or more failed capacitors. If you leave it off they discharge and then take too much current as they recharge, causing an over-current fault.

You can get replacement PSUs for some makes/models, but for a screen that small it's probably easier to just replace it.

Alternatively, her rights under SOGA against the supplier (not against Philips) might get her a replacement, but again it may be more trouble than it's worth...

Been reading about the soga as i thought about that. Shop it was bought from was Richer Sounds and according to the receipt she payed £329-99.
She loves the TV as it's really nice looking. What would it cost[ball park] to fix?? Would it not be better to get in touch with Phillips, before the retailer!
    Cheers for reply..

PS: didnt read good enough about SOGA.... " When you buy a product, the contract is with the retailer – not the manufacturer. In order to use The SoGA"

My past experience of Philips' customer service has been bad. I doubt they will help - they certainly aren't obliged to unless it's in warranty period, which sounds unlikely.

Richer may help though. Generally you are very dependent on who you get to speak to, but I've bought a lot of stuff there and generally the staff are helpful.

Right i spoke to Richer Sounds CS just now and he's taken my receipt details and said he will be back in touch. According to him if it was under 2 years old he could sort it out there and then. But, as it's over 2 years old he said he will have to speak with Phillips about it and he will do that tomorrow. So, what he did say when i quoted sale off goods act was " thats a tricky way to go" what ever he was implying i don't know. I am prepared to have report done on tv. Main thing is i've started ball rolling and i will speak to Consumer Direct tomorrow about it.

He may have been referring to the fact that they can - as you already know - require that you have an engineer's report done on the item, which can put some people off. It's a double-edged sword to them though, as IIRC if the report says the fault was inherent, they have to refund the cost of the report as well.

If Philips are like some other manufacturers (e.g. Canon) they may offer you something like a refurbed equivalent item at a heavy discount, which may be the way to go for minimum aggro all round - choice will be yours...

CS got back to me with an offer to fix it at no charge to me. Taking into the local shop tomorrow. Not the 1st one off this make of tv's to be repaired is what the bloke said. Capacitor problem according to him.
