( Oh on a sidenote, when I was talking to the Council about the whole Student/Non-Student issue, they said the Non-Student does *NOT* get a 25% Single Person Discount because they're living with someone! Pretty ridiculous )

That statement is not true, My OH has been at UNI for the last 3 years and has had to provide a letter from the uni confiriming his place thier and then our council tax bill was reduced by 25%. He has had to take a new letter down each year and it has always been no problems.

Eh? My husband is currently a student and is ignored for CT purposes. That means we get 25% discount as I am the only other adult in the house. We got a certificate from his university and sent it to the council and they sent an amended bill.

As the previous poster said, this is UNTRUE. My friends (2 student, 2 FT work) live in a house together and the FT workers get a 25% discount because they live with students. So its not the single persons discount in this case, its the fact they live with students.

I can confirm that it is incorrect ( I work in council tax), the 25% discount would be applicable where there is only 1 non-student in the property.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

There should not be a discount in this case (unless one of the two FT workers is disregarded somehow) as there are two people resident who are not full time students.

It is worrying you live together but do not talk to each other about finances, but do consult total strangers on the Internet, some of who are giving incorrect information.

Apart from whether or not there is an entitlement to council tax relief - would the OP print off this thread and show it to his partner?

Bodes well for the future relationship, methinks!

If you say so! I was only stating what I know to be the case currently. There are 2 FT workers and 2 FT students. The FT workers only pay 75% of the usual amount because they live with students.

If it would please you I would take great pleasure in informing the council they are undercharging these 2 people as they are not my favourite individuals!
