Northern Rock Current Account

Has anyone thought of getting one of these on a speculative basis because when they are sold back to the private sector it is likely to be to a big name such as Tesco or Virgin, hence giving you ahead start as you already have the current account they (Tesco and Virgin) want to launch and that these companies have a reputation for good customer service.
It is only £1 to open one and at the worst you are likely to end up with an ATM only card and no cheque book. I cant see there being many declines when that is the most basic package available on the account.

Downside: Hassle of opening an account, pointlessness of the current offering, another set of statements to monitor for fraud etc.
Upside: Uh....
Not seeing it, personally. If and when there is a decent current account offering from some hypothetical successor to Northern Rock, why not just apply for it then?0 -
A good point.0

Northern Rock haven't done current accounts for ages. Where did you see this advertised? It is not on their website.0 -

It is, look under savings and scroll down the screen, or just Google "northern rock current account".
It comes with either an ATM card only, an ATM card and cheque book, or a 3-in-1 Visa Debit card (guarantee limit is either £50 or £100) and cheque book. You can tick which one you want on the application form but you will get what you are given based on your credit score.0 -

Apologies. It looks like they are not actively promoting it then!0 -
this account is 'provided' by co-op so you'll be stuck with their awful systems... just do a search for smile:santa2:0

It takes quite a while to set one up though. I have one, and after applying in branch, it had to be approved by head office, which is about a mile from the branch, and then I had to wait for the approval in the post, then wait for the card etc.
The cheque book is yellow though, so it's quite nice.0 -
