Nikon D60 dSLR - what memory card?

Options
Hi

Just purchased above camera and info says SD card but can that be either a SD or SDHC card and is so, which is best? What size also?

We have just moved from Nikon Coolpix compact camera and have a 2GB SD card but wondering if new camera fits fewer pics per Gb as it is 10mp rather than 5mp.

Hope that isn't confusing.

TIA
SARA

Yes, it will fit half as many photos per card.

SDHC is the newer of the two, and is faster. However, it's not as widely compatible as SD cards are.

If you only want to use the card with that camera, consider an SDHC card; if you want to use it with other hardware that doesn't support SDHC (such as older cameras or card readers), then go for SD.

As for size, it's up to you really. The bigger the card, the more expensive it is obviously, and the more photos you can fit on it. This has its downside though, in that if you have all your photos on an 8GB card and something happens to it, you've lost all your photos. If you have them on 4 2GB cards and something happens to one of them, then you've still got most of your photos. Then again, having your photos all on one card is a lot more convenient.

Personally, I would rather have a few smaller cards than one big one, but as I say, it's up to yourself.

Thanks for quick response. Tend to agree with you about smaller size but carry a couple perhaps. Just checking what size an SD card goes up to? Is 2GB max or can you get 4GB?
Have been seeing 'class 2, 4 etc mentioned' and from limited knowledge this seems to relate to speed of writing the pic to the card. Does this apply to SD cards and is so, Which is best to go for ?
    Thanks again

i seem to remember reading somewhere that there are 16gb & 32gb cards around.

i'd stick with smaller cards as 4gb+ would be a lot of pics to loose if the card failed.

SD cards with up to 4GB capacity do exist, but according to this not all devices can make use of them.

With that in mind, you can either get yourself a 1GB SD card or else not bother worrying about compatibility and go the whole hog with a 4GB SDHC card. Even the Class 6 ones are relatively inexpensive, and that's officially as fast as they get.

I've a D40X, a bit annoyed that the D60 came out weeks after buying it, could have used the auto cleaning sensor, but hey!!!
I carry around 2x 2GB Sandisk Ultra II memory cards.

I have the same with my D40. Shoot in RAW and never had a problem with them.
