apart from stuff already mentioned -

Going abroad, I take a second spare wheel, as I once spent 3 hours in Germany finding a place with the right size tyre for a Citroen, and it cost £30 more than here.

if towing, I take a trolley jack which I think is a bit safer than a bottle jack, though I'll also use the Citroen jack on a wood spacer.

Spare trailer plugs and sockets, set of mounting screws for socket, and wiring diagram
    nylon tie-wraps
    ratchet straps

collection of foreign maps, though I recently got a cheap sat-nav
booklets of cheap hotel chains abroad

2 or 4 hi-vis jackets, not just one

    insect repellent spray
    suntan stuff
    spare sunglasses
    ibuprofen tablets

    spare house key

packet of 'tough hand cleaning wipes', bought as a clearance item, which I haven't tried out yet, but should be useful on the next puncture

I have a Fire Extinguisher at the side of the Drivers seat

I forgot about the fire extinguisher, I have one clipped into a bracket in the boot. It's too big to carry in the passenger compartment.

    I have ....

    umpteen CD's
    a window hammer
    a fire extinguisher
a teddy bear - he's my driving critic, if I brake too fast he hides in the footwell!
    a fleece for work
a camera to take pics in case of accident
ice-scrapers (too lazy to take them out)
    numerous torches
pen & paper (talk about organised, but none of the pens work!)

    then in the boot ...
    warning triangle
    hi-viz vest
bag with warm clothes, boots (could be a long cold walk home in winter)
    more torches
    screenwash (I think)
various spare bits & pieces for the car that OH thinks might be useful
    tow-rope

and here's the bit I'm really proud of ...
3 pairs of heeled boots (2 black, 1 brown)
4 pairs of shoes - for work, but I can't drive in heels!

and for some reason, the weekly back-up tapes for the server at work!

A Yorkshire sales rep I used to know claimed always to carry: -

A hammer, lest he was locked in.
    A can of soup
A candle, to give light and to warm the soup and car interior.

This was back in the days when it could get VERY foggy on the moors.
    Watch out for the sandbag.
