Almost no heat from new multi fuel stove

You are right it has cut our fuel bill in half, Just keep your eyes open for wood and keep a good pile drying. Give wet logs at least 12 mth to dry out. I have never used coal as we alwayd have had enough logs. Must give it a go some time. ( That reminds me must get the chimney swepted)The measure of love is love without measure0

You would have to gather a tremendous amount of fallen wood to heat a house for a winter.
I keep the central heating off, and heat one room only with wood and anthracite (£7.50 for 25kg bag). Used about 6 bags last winter.0 -
you should get a good heat of this stove.
it could be that your trying to put 2 much logs onto it too early and smovering it.
Crumple up about 3-4 pages of newspaper ans put in the stove and get lots of kindling and put lots of this in the fire on top of the paper, make a kind of tippee round the paper.
Light the paper and push the door closed but dont lock it leave it just pushed closed so there is a slight gap, also open the vents up on the fire.
Let the kindling really catch and add more kindling until you get a real good fire going and then put a smallish log into firebox and let that catch then build it up slowely.
now close the door but leave the vents open,
Once the first log is burning well add another and so on till its roaring. when adding the logs overlap the logs so there is gaps for air to circulate (sort of criss cross them)
once you got a roaring fire then adjust the air control to suit your needs.0 -
Thanks guys, I'm taking all the advice on and I'll be giving it another couple of goes this week.
So thank you one and all and we'll close this thread now (unless I still can't succeed and like Arnold 'I'll be back' !)0 -
Hi I have readd all the forums I can find over the last few days but cannot so far seem to find an answer to my problem.
I can burn my stove all day ie 12 hours on coke dry seasoned wood coal etc but the stove is only luke warm as are my radiators all 6 of them,
I previously used a franklin room heating stove with no probs except it was too hot!!
This stove is a Hunter herald 14 multifuel boiler stove.
It has to be burned on flat out all the time, if you do shut down the airvents to let it stay in all night it stays in but no heat whatsoever from it, as It is it is not actually heating the room I have to use my oil central heating.
My chimney is not lined but that never stopped the last stove melting us,,,So where is all the heat going and why is my stove only just warm,, my hot water is hot,, this has me stumped and is raising my blood presure as it cost £2k for this system and it does not work!! lol!
Would appreciate any help0 -
Hi, just stubled across this thread when looking for the answer to a similar problem.
we had a firefox 5 multifuel stove installed a few weeks ago.
we have so far only burned seasoned wood and manage to get a good fire going but although the stove gets hot to touch (havent tried boiling water on it but its very hot to the touch) it doesn't seem to throw much heat into the room? Its not a huge room and you can only really feel the heat if you sit in front of the stove!
When we bought the stove they had one burning in the showroom and you could really feel the heat!
what are we doing wrong?0 -
Just wondered if you have a restrictor plate in the chimney and if the stove is recessed into the inglenook?
I was sweating last night in front of mine, the whole house is nice and toasty this morning and theres a full tank of HW for the rads should I decide to use it.0 -

Hi, The stove is recessed into the inglenook. I am sorry but I dont know what a restrictor plate is?:o
It seems to be getting a little better but I am certainly not sweating. The room is warmer than it would be without the stove on but not as hot as I expected. Maybe I'm just expecting too much0 -
hi , we just got a multi burning stove a few weeks ago. i was really disappointed at first as i felt all the heat was going up the chinmey. but after lighting it every nite for a week and burning coal it is fantastic. try changing the settings on it EegulARLY AND YOU WILL FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. I BURN LOGS AND COAL, LOGS ON THEIR OWN REQUIRES A BIT MORE PATIENCE. GOOD LUCK0

Restrictor plate may be a register plate, caffeine hadnt kicked in when I posted
Its a steel plate that sits in the chimney just above the stove with a hole in for the stove pipe, it should be there.
I think the answer is that yours is reccessed though. Obviously you'll have a lot of heat coming off the case and especially the top, when it rises the easiest place to go is up the chimney, mines level with the wall of the chimney to accomodate pipe work so heat from the top heads for the ceiling and gets circulated around the room as it cools.
Is it possible to shift it forward and just buy some new enamel pipework?0
