You’ve also got to be prepared to walk out without the item you wanted to buy if they don’t offer a favourable price.

Establish their best price, offer a bit less and say it’s up to them if they want to sell it, you’re not bothered as you can leave it.

    Hi
When it comes to haggling no small shopkeeper will refuse to knock a little off (if they can afford it) but I've got a small shop and you get people coming in and asking for even more off already marked down items and then getting stroppy if you won't knock the item down further. A lot of small shops are having to try and survive on very small profit margins already. Its OK to barter but you need to also be prepared to accept an occasional refusal.

  • if you work in the big companys like currys and comet the profit margins on the goods are not that high so they wont do a discount on single orders not even bulk buys really unless you are buying on credit if people go for the add ons and insurance then the better the deal gets some places do the insurance on direct debit so you only need to let it run for a month and cancel the direct debit through your bank just so you get full potential out of the deal

As a store manager for a largeish retailer, I'll offer the following advice...

Follow what Dom says, be nice, be friendly while trying for a better deal or else personally I'd put up a barrier and become none responsive.

Also, normally after the 4th time of saying no, sorry, it means no!

Make sure your sob story (if there is one) is relevant. I don't care if your dog died last week so you deserve £50 off your new dining table!

Am thinking of haggling when I go for a new fridge freezer. The last time I tried it didn't go very well. I was all geared up, said the right things... 'I'm after a PS3 and want to take it home today blah blah.'. Turned out they didn't have any in stock anyway. I didn't get one in the end so at least I saved myself 300 quid!
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

I have always haggled when i buy something, my husband hates it he would just go in and pay full price.
He actually waits outside now while i get us a good deal.
Try it its fun and very often very rewarding.
