Calling all Brita filter (or similar) owners

My son drinks lots of water and does lots of sport and has asked me if we could get a Brita water filter.
I dont know hardly anything about these at all and Which haven't tested these so I'm calling out to all MSEs for help.
What do these do, are they worth the money, any make better than any other, how do they make the water taste, better, worse, just the same.
If I was to get a Brita, should I get a particular model as I am aware each model has a different cartridge, are these cheaper for any particular models than others.
Should I get one with an automatic timer to tell me when cartridge needs replacing, or will manual be just as good.
I hope you can help.

We have two Brita filters (one was given to us last week) and they each take different filters. We have haven't tried the new one yet but I got some filters today.
It does make the water taste better and also keeps the kettle cleaner. Food tastes better when the water is used for cooking as does a cup of tea.
We have one with a timer and I would recommend one of those. We don't change the filter as recommended every four weeks except in the summer when we use more water. However if you son is drinking a lot then you would probably need to change it that often. Once you start drinking filtered water, you soon learn when the cartridge is failing anyway as the change in taste is noticeable.
We had a Kenwood before. Nothing wrong with that but it was an early one and the jug simply wasn't big enough for our needs once the children started growing up.
The new Brita filters have enhanced filtration and as that is the new oval cartridge I would get one of those just in case the old type filter is to become obsolete in years to come.0 -
I got a basic Brita Filter, although I think all the Brita ones come with the timer on top, for my hubby as he doesn't like the taste of tapwater and it costs me a fortune in bottled water, not to mention the hernia lugging it back from the shops. It cost £18, but that was a couple of years ago, so they'ver probably come down in price now. He swears by it. He says it gets rid of the metallic taste in our water, and makes it drinkable. The Brita filters last 4 weeks, and cost around £3 to replace, however you can buy multipacks which work out cheaper. Also, in my ASDA they sell Kenwood filters which are 2 quid odd, and fit the Brita filter ok.
I wouldn't be without mine, it saves me a fortune.
Hope this helpsJuly Grocery Challenge Budget £160

I got one (not Brita but a filter nonetheless) from Aldi for £3.99. I believe that you can get replacement cartridges for this model for £1 or so frmo Home Bargains.

Replacement filters - Home Bargains £1.99. Seems to be a permanent offer. Fits Brita, Kenwood, WAL, Boots, dodgy ALDI £3.99 models, etc.

i have used filter jugs for about 5 years, its even used to filter the water for the fish! find it stays cleaner longer! i ve got a 2 litre round kenwood type jug, i found the slimline fridge ones a totally waste of time as you have to fill it often..can anyone confirm if the new brita filters are rapid filters? i do wish that the water could filter half the time it takes..my friend had a morphy kettle with water filter and it filters a lot quicker so its obviously possible...0

I use a Brita filter and have used a filter system for the past 15 years I My partner and I drink 6-8 litres of water a day and I use the filters for 2-4 weeks and it seems to work the same, I live in a hard water area and I get no scale in my kettle because of the filter.SCMS1969

Another vote for Brita. Although, unlike a post above, I love our slimline model that fits in the fridge door even though it only holds around 2 pints. It is great for nice cool water in the Summer.
I normally stock up on filters when the local Supermarket has an offer on, unfortuantely so does everyone else so the stock often disappears in no time.
It makes the water taste 'cleaner' and it is still very drinkable even after having stood on the bedside table overnight, our unfiltered tap water tastes hideous if left to stand for some reason.

Hi
I got a Brita filter from Boots @ Monks Cross York two weeks ago. It was reduced to £12.50. Cant remember how much they were before the reduction but they were quite expensive.0 -
We love our Brita Water Filter. At the moment Boots Advantage card machine is giving out vouchers for 500 points if you buy a Brita Filter System from them. It also works on just the boxes of filters.0
