Wine glasses, definately. I can barely remember drinking wine out of anything other than the bottle or a mug.

I bought a 3 kilo bag of pasta at the start of my second year which lasted me the whole year :D. It only cost me £1! in 2006, I miss bargain pasta...
    Finally bought a home

I have seen wicker basket bins in Asda for £2 you could put all the items in this and then wrap it up, could probably get a similar one in a pound shop. This would be more practical than a traditional hamper.

    Condoms!

Practical, fun and very useful! Stop those babies popping out and costing you loads!

That made me yearn for my student days again... It was also actually a very good suggestion!

Erm...about the wine glass idea....there is a reason students never have wine glasses....they always get broken! Theyre the worst kinda glasses for getting broken. I know you can get a lot of different plastic glasses though so if you could find plastic wine glasses they might be a better idea? If not then cheap ones from asda but they WILL get broken if she has a party lol

that's why she needs loads of them ;)

and plates, mum got me a 16 piece set out of argos for about £8 when I went to uni. think i had about 10 by the time i finished (not bad going :D)

scented candles, cos halls of residence or shared houses always stink.

flip flops if she has communal showers

bath-robe/nice jammies for when she is gossiping in friends rooms at night

pans are good, but cheap ones, cos they will get ruined.

Thanks for the suggestions, it was her birthday on the 1st.

I got her in the end:
    4 x wine glasses
    1 x mug
1 x notebook with recipes/student tips in with photos of our friends on the front
    1 x wooden spoon
    1 x pasta
    1 x baked beans

    :)

Sorry to reopen this thread, but one of my closest friends got into uni. I want to make them a little box of something to take with them but I'll have to post it as I live far away. Also, money is a bit tight, so can anyone suggest something which doesn't cost much which will be useful?

I'd go for cheap stationery, mixed with recipes maybe if you know any good ones.

What I sometimes do is send a gift voucher to people, but add a silly little something which usually cost less than it should have done, so they don't know how much I've actually spent.

Recipes are a good idea, thanks.

I was thinking of writing a list of tips/money saving hints as well :)
