How did you get on with removing the artex. the house I am buying has artex on kitchen ceiling and walls. I am worried about damaging the walls by removing it. its quite an old house. Also how will I know if there is asbestos in it

I tried the steam strip method on our dining room ceiling...for 12 months we had bits of stringy artex hanging down over our heads where I just gave up in disgust. It was just impossible to get the stuff off. We ended up paying a fortune to get the ceiling and walls replastered. We still have the sitting room ceiling to do...

Re Wander's question on asbestos, we got a bloke in to sample ours before we started (and our loft insulation which we were going to replace). Results took a few days but gave us peace of mind.

Does anyone have advice on getting rid of woodchip wallpaper? Did the box room and took about 40 hours, and have two large rooms to go. Hubby refuses to let me start the other two rooms and says it is not that bad to look at. Yeah right.

Thanks SammyD. I am not sure what to do now. I am paying a fortune to buy the house. I couldnt spend anymore on replastering. Does it cost a lot?

Well, I guess it depends where you live. We are in London - cost over £1100 for the ceiling and walls of one (largish) room (plus a few other bits and pieces - another chimney breast (Artex again) and one wall of the bathroom). Almost died at the price, but we got lots of quotes and the only cheap ones came from people who I would not have had in my home without an armed guard watching them. This also explains why our sitting room still has an Artex ceiling! Mind you, watching them replaster the ceiling...well, lets just say there must be easier ways to earn a living.

I have heard it is cheaper for a "job lot", and no doubt varies depending on location.

Why can't you check for asbestos before you move in?

  • Definately plaster over it. Removing it is a pain in the Bum. It will take forever and then you may have to get the walls skimmed anyway.
