We several years ago made a mistake and artexed our hall, stairs and landing. Ok its been there 14 years but we have gone off it. Would we be better getting it reskimmed by a plasterer or what ?
It pays to challenge

Yes Providing there is enough room to take the extra thickness.
Eg,Around the doors/windows/skirting boards.0 -
I would rather move house than tackle this one :eek:0

I'm seriously considering that. Some previous idiot (no offence OP) who lived in my house decided that artex on the kitchen walls was a good thing. Artexers should be shot. All of them. :mad:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
We had a plasterer go over ours on stairs, also on a ceiling. Then we papered over it, but you could just paint it with emulsion. It was all done in a day.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Just read that, we DIDN'T paper the ceiling. Though come to think of it, when I was a nipper ( during the crimean war) all our ceilings were papered to match the walls. My parents must have been bonkers:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

My house has got the living room ceiling papered in patterned wallpaper, which is different to the walls. The previous owners were a bit obsessed with patterned wallpaper.0

I was told by a decorator many moons ago ,if you want to put artex on the walls put lining paper on first . then when you want to remove it pull the lining paper off. This is exactly what I did .0

If you use a steam stripper the artex will come off.Firstly the emulsion turns into like elasticy type of stuff and can then be pulled off bit by bit. Then take a scraper and make criss crosses(not too deep or you will damage the underneath wall) all over the walls so the steam can penetrate quicker.Just hold the steamer over a patch untill it softens and scrape away.Very time consuming and very messy job so i would cover your carpets good and even tape down the sheets to prevent them moving.
Maximum cost would be £30 for the steamer or a couple of hundred pounds for reskimming a staircase, huge difference in costs, let us know how you get on or what you decide to do.0 -
Husband has just read this post and agrees with squiggles above, will save you a lot of money. Although it does smell a bit!
Good luck0 -
Think yourselves lucky.
My dream house (which i now live in) has artexing in every room! (looks like a xmas cake!)
Only the previous owners were too cheap to pay a professional and so did it themselves... with plaster!!!
And I only found this out when I had someone come and give me a quote.
Wish they d used paper underneath.
Ah well.0
