  • The income support for lone parents is changing next year with regards to childs age, apparently child has to be under a certain age, but I was told you could claim JSA instead when rule change happens, also be warned that student loan is counted to end of June and not to end of term as I just found out and now have to wait even longer with no money
  • I'm studying accounting

Cool, maths is not my strond point! I have a friend who goes to Aberdeen uni, she's doing accountancy too.

It's a real shame that you have to pay the money back, but £9 a week isn't so bad I guess.
I was aware that you could claim IS, but as cardiffforthecup mentioned JSA, I've not heard of that.. Do you know the age the child has to be cardiffforthecup?

The rules for IS have changed whether you are a student or not, the age now is 12 or under, this is changing to 7 and under in 2010 (I think).

Wish I had known I could claim IS last summer as I missed out on all those payments plus HB. Good thing is I saved some money this year for during the summer so the IS is a bonus.
  • If you claim it wrongly you have to pay it back, but if you didn't know they don't backdte, it can seem unfair, I understand why it's like that but it wouldn't stop me being a bit miffied if I was in your position.

Well don'e for saving money too, how did you manage that? I'd like to try and save a little if at all possible.

I just divided my loan over 52 weeks and lived off that amount per week, saving the excess. I also saved extra when I could. The difference was only about £30pw but it adds up over the course of the year. This is what I did during 1st year and lived off the savings during the summer, so I repeated it for this year then I found out I could claim IS so I have the savings as a bonus and the IS to live off.
