Child tax and Uni

Options
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'll be damned if I can find it ;)
Can anyone answer or point me to the right thread please.

I've had all my finance through and wondered if child tax credit is lowered due to your financial package.

As a single parent I get full CTC now, so will this amount be adjusted becasue of my loans bursery and grants etc.

Thanks in advance for your replies:beer:

The only part of your student finance you need to declare to tax credits is the adult dependance part and I do not think that will apply to you.
You're a single mum, your ctc will not be affected. Don't forget when you're a student you do not pay council tax
  • Thank you.
you're right I won't get adults dependancy grant. I know for my H/B ( I'm in private rented so there's a small chance I may still get a little help) I have to tell them about adult maintenance grant, just wondered if it was the same with CTC

I'm only trying to work out my budget for Sept, just to give me a rough idea.
I know I won't be worse off but I hate the not knowing iykwim. At least mow I can work out a rough estimate.

    Thanks again.

Full rules regarding tax credits and student income are shown here - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/TCTM04500.htm
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Now why couldn't i find that! lol

    Thanks

I am also a single parent and a student, and am entitled to full CTC none of my student loans etc are counted as income for CTC.

I am still eligible for some HB, all income including grants/bursaries etc has to be declared to HB. I don't know if this applies to you (I'm in Scotland so have different loans etc) but if you receive a lone parent grant this has to be declared to HB, they told me it was disregarded then 8 months later decided they should have included it as income resulting in me owing them over £700.
  • So now you owe them due to their mistake, that's bad!

I'll have to go into Housing office and give them all my financial details at the begining of Sept, so they can change my H/B accordingly. Hope they don't make any mistakes with me!

Just make sure you get it in writing what they say is disregarded (if anything) wish I had as I have no proof that I was informed of this, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Good luck with uni, what are you studying?
  • Yes hindsight is wonderful, its a shame you didn't have anything in writing, I mean if you can't trust the council to give you the right info on means tested benefits Do you definatly have to pay it back? If you were told it was disregarded, how come they now know its not, if they got in touch to tell you it's not disregarded then what made them get in touch to say its wrong if they're not admitting they gave you the wrong info.. sorry thats a really muddled question I know what I mean just can't type it!!!

I'm studying Social Work, what bout you?

I had my annual review where HB officer came to my house and took copies of all my details, this is when it came to light that I received a lone parent grant apparently they were not aware of it before then.

I queried it and they haven't given me a satisfactory explanation, it is obviously their fault otherwise it would mean I hadn't informed them of the income (surely they would then be saying I had claimed fraudulently which hasn't happened). They are taking it off my HB at £9pw.

Another point to note, I have been able to claim IS for the summer break this year (I've just finished 2nd year), apparently I would have been eligible for it last summer but I thought the loan was to cover me for the whole year and didn't apply so make sure you don't miss out on this, as it also means I will be entitled to higher HB.

    I'm studying accounting.
