wireless router problem

I finally splashed out and bought a wireless router this morning, I bought it from a local shop so paid a fair bit of money for it but I needed the option of the telephone support they offer as I'm not very techie.
However, I have problems and I have defeated even their knowledge, at the moment my son is going back to the shop as they are going to exchange the unit as they can only think there is a problem, but here's what happens in case anyone else has any ideas to help me:
I can get my LAN connection up and running, it shows the little connection symbol running in the task bar. However when I try to do the next step and register my connection and use my ISP (Virgin) I can't do it. They told me to go into Internet explorer and gave me an ISP address to use where I would be given the set up instructions. However, all I get is an internet explorer page that says "Forbidden
You were denied access because:
Access denied by access control list. "
The screen says that is a 403 error.
The shop say they have never heard of that happen, hence the replacement of the unit.
Any suggestions in case it isn't a faulty unit?
Thanks
Soo

How are you connected to the router, wirelessy or via cable? Sometimes routers restrict access to cable connections only for security reasons."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

I think that this is to do with the security level on the router itself. You will need to "allow" the address of the machine connecting to the router on the router itself. Some routers have 'access control lists' which define who can and who can't connect to them!0

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the new unit, but am not going to try it yet as the box has been opened, the instruction booklet has been torn in half and only half is present and the cables are obviously used. It makes me think that all these units have problems and this is a second hand one.
I am not techie enough to understand some of the explanations but will go through settings and such like when I do attach the unit to see what I can find about allowing websites.
The router itself is connected to the PC via a LAN wire and also to the BT filter through a normal telephone wire thing.

Connect the router via cable, turn on the router and right click my network places icon and choose properties.
There you will see all your network connections. Right click Local Area Connections and click disable (make sure the router is turned on and connected via cable). Once this is done and its disabled reclick enable.
This will call for an IP address from the routers DHCP inbuilt server and give your PC a specific IP address of eg: 10.0.0.2. Once thats done connect to the routers main IP address ( could be 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1) so check the manual.
Once thats done and you can see the routers login page, login and then configure the router with your ISP's username and password.
Once thats done then try and connect to the internet.

Where will I find My Network places please?
I have been following the installation instructions on manual and have an IP address to input, but that also returns my 'Forbidden' message.
Second unit currently on way back to shop, as exactly the same thing happened on installation and I wasn't really happy with having a used unit anyway.
They have no more left in stock so I am having to pay an additional £20 to go to a different router.
Back soon!

I remember my brother in law being stumped with a wireless Router, it was solved when I recommended this: The trick is to set up the PC first, connected directly by cable to your broadband. Ensure it works. Then connect the Router to the PC & broadband, access the router's control pages via Web Browser and use the CLONE option to clone the MAC address from the PC to the Router. Now the Router is 'pretending' to be your PC to the ISP so security chack is passed. This key procedure is well buried in many user guides.0

@ Buglawton
Depends on the ISP. Only a few require MAC spoofing.

Update. I have spent so much money I lost count on an 0870 number trying to get some support from the manufacturers. I was finally told that my ISP was not compatible and the shop agreed to take back the router.
However, just before I unplugged it I gave it one last try using settings that shouldn't work and I' m now using the connection. However, my new question is have I done something horribly wrong as my internet connection icon no longer shows my ISP but just says connected 100.00 mbps.
If I open my old broadbank connection it just shows as available to dial but if i try to dial I can't (obviously) as the modem is already being used.
What have I done?

Further update:
OK, I've given up, nothing was going right and I've spent all day on the telephone with people who can't understand my London accent, and whose accent I cannot understand and I have no idea now what is happening.
I've uninstalled everything and the shop have agreed to take it all back for a full refund tomorrow. I'll just share my PC and not worry about a second connection for My sons PC.
Thanks though for the suggestions, you were all making much more sense than the various help desks I was talking to.
