Yes I am a student.
I am officially a student and am a member of portsmouth uni.
My Ciloct is the same amount as what my friends used to be.

Right, lets just clarify a few things...
1. You are on a course at Portsmouth university and are in HM Forces?
2. Are you the licensee of the FQ in question?
3. You believe students are entitled to a discount in council tax?{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -
I am on a course in portsmouth, yes.
I do have the MQ in my name yes.
It's not that I believe that students should get a discount. They do.:oCurrent Debt £38,000:o

Okay, I see where you are coming from but....
You are in the forces and as such DE will not class you as a student and secondly you are not paying council tax so you cannot get a students council tax discount. You are paying CILOCT, charge in leui of council tax.{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -
You could of course move out of the quarter & rent privately. You would then get the council tax reduction . However you'd then be paying market rates so you'd probably be worse off.0

I dont know if anyone can help but i'm currently serving in the RN living in SLA and own my own property over 400 miles from my base. Im currently receiving 25% discount on my council tax for being the sole occupier of the house, but after reading various posts i feel i should be recieving 50% discount as the property is unoccupied. After speaking to my local council they say i should actually be paying more for not living in it than if i was living it and only want to give me 10% discount. Baffling I know. I hope some one can shine some light on this or point me in the right direction of where it might be published that i should receive 50% discount.
Any comments/guidance would be much appreciated
Thank you.0 -
^ I put a response to this in your earlier thread and I now see the same info is posted on page one of this thread.
As for the student Council Tax discount that civilians can claim, unfortunately forces families can't claim it from CILOCTIn some places ciloct/council tax charges level out so it's not just as simple as 'renting on the open market' as suggested earlier.
I do find it annoying that all other mature students on my course can claim it but I can't claim it for my family.
In answer to a question earlier, yes ciloct is also charged in Germany etc, although which government pot it goes into I do not know :rolleyes:0
