Broadband Transfer Qs

Hi,
Im looking to change internet providers (finally decided to dump AOL broadband), but not sure how i make the transfer. A friend told me that i needed to get some sort of code from AOL to give to the new provider, but he wasnt quite sure why or what this code does. Any ideas?
Also is there anyway that i could cancel AOL and join another company without losing access to the internet for the interim period. Because from my understanding the providers say setup/line access will take about 10-14 days, so that will leave me without internet as i have to cancel AOL before i can register with a new provider.
What are my options?
Thanks for any help.

Check that the provider you go to will do a MAC transfer, basically you contact AOL and ask for the MAC code which you then pass onto the new provider, they then arrange the transfer of service and if you lucky your downtime will be minutes at the most.

And can be many weeks - months before you are back up and running with a new provider. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
