credited by mistake. Advice please

Good afternoon,

I have a little problem in that this morning I woke up to find £1000 had been credited to my barclaycard by mistake.

I quickly put off the rather nice idea of a spending spree to celebrate and investigated further.

Indeed the money has been credited by mistake and the bookie would naturally like me to return it to them.

How best do I go about doing this without mounting fees. I.E returning it directly via credit card will be classed as a cash advance.

An interesting one. Can't they reverse the transaction?

I guess not, I think it was too late before they noticed.

Hence them asking me if it would be possible for me to return the money.

this happened to me but it was before the days of cash advance fees on these kind of transactions. I just deposited the money back with them and they gave me £50 for my trouble.

    Thank JP,

I've managed to deposit the money into my bank account free of charge.

It'll take a couple of days and then I'll see if I can bank transfer it across.
  • Offer to send them a cheque, less your processing fee?

Ask for a compensation and suggest to them that you send them a cheque, cause you can't use the money on the credit card straightaway really and there is no interest earned on the credit card.

I would be very careful indeed before refunding anything!!!!

This could be a variation of a scam whereby somebody puts money into your account (in this case Barclaycard) maybe from a fraudulent source.

You may find after you have legimately refunded the money that the original credit might be recalled and suddenly you are £1000 down!

Put it in writing to Barclaycard that you have been contacted, and that the £1000 is not yours.
Let Barclaycard sort it out for you but again I would strongly advise not refunding anything off your own bat.

I think it sounds a bit over cautious.

OP already said "Indeed the money has been credited by mistake and the bookie would naturally like me to return it to them."

Well, suppose you can ask Barclaycard what you gonna do.
  • what jones said.... do NOT pay them anything!! Barclays can sort it out....
