I might not be able to get to the opticians just yet, but when I do watch this space lol! It's really frustrating as I'd like to go sooner but work gets in the way. I'll keep you updated as I will get it sorted.

Divadee, did you get a free retest? I'm thinking if I just call in to the opticians they will say there is nothing wrong with my glasses and then I'll have another wasted journey having to book an appointment for retest.

I had an eye test at an independant opticians years ago, got told there was nothing wrong with my eyesight  (thats funny because i was long-sighted with prisms:rolleyes:). I took my dd to Specsavers one day and mentioned to the optician about my recent eye test. She offered to re-do it and if it showed up that i needed glasses, i wouldnt have to pay. If i didnt require glasses as the previous optician was adamant about, i would have to pay. My script had changed and thankfully no more headaches or squinting since.

I wonder if its worth going to another opticians and mentioning whats happened, if they do another eye test, then testing your glasses to check the script, instead of returning to Specsavers.
  • glad you got it sorted Divadee. No harm in asking for a "goodwill" gesture for the inconvenience, although it would be at their discretion, they don't have to do anything other than sort out the problem you were having, which hopefully they have done now.

Ballandchain, If you are having problems with glasses always take them back where you got them and give them a chance to rectify it, no optician should try to charge you for this. Going elsewhere for a test only confuses the issue.

zztopgirl, if you often have problems getting the correct result from a sight test first time then bring a copy of your prescription with you next time (or better still, go to the same optician who got it right in the past, they will have all your old notes which makes it a lot easier when things like prisms are involved)

Well it's been a while as work has been hectic and I went back to Specsavers. They checked the glasses and said the prescription was right and did one final check and found the pupils hadn't been lined up properly. (I don't recall the SA at the time lining up my pupils, although he used this box thingy like a pair of binoculars to hold in front of my eyes.) So I gave them the glasses for them to correct. I went to pick them up today and thought something still isn't right. The new lenses on one pair of glasses (second pair seem ok) were still blurred. SA checked the glasses, said prescription is right but the axis is out by 1 mm!

She took them to a guy instore who said he'd rectified the problem. I thought the glasses would have to go away to be corrected. Anyway, it is still not right and I've rung them yet again and they said they have done everything for me but they booked me in for a retest and the problem with the axis was sorted in their lab instore.

Both pairs need adjusting on the frames again and it's getting beyond a joke. This will be the third time I have to go in. I've never had so much trouble with glasses. I'll keep you posted on how I get on.

Wishiwasarichgirl, my old prescription said the axis on my right eye is 165.0, left eye 10.0 and on my latest prescription my right eye is 160.0 and left eye 5.0. That seems a big difference and I wondered if they got the axis correct for both eyes? I'd be intrigued to the answer!

When I was talking to the SA I asked for my pupillary distance and she said she didn't think they could tell me for legal reasons!! Then she checked with someone and came back and said yes she could tell me after all. Strange.

I'm guessing the axis runs from 0 to 180, it's just an angle of rotation and relates to the axis of the cylindrical portion of the lens. The difference isn't that great, it'll be 25 degrees as once you get to 180 you start back at zero again. (I'm not optician but I think that's right).

I had a few issues getting my glasses sorted recently. They managed to order the wrong lens which was clearly wrong as I couldn't see a thing out of it. Old lenses put back in the frames. When I go back once correct lens has been ordered, they fail to replace both lenses, only the one that had been previously incorrect. Realise after I've just moved somewhere else for a few months. Fortunately as I went to a well known chain, I went to the branch local to where I am and voiced my suspicions, which proved to be correct. Eventually got sorted and now have two correct lenses.

At least I don't feel alone Nicola. Frustrating isn't it! Soooo, I went for my retest today and the retest was just as quick as the first test. The optician apologised they got the prescription wrong for my right eye and they've changed the axis back to the original reading I had done a couple of years ago. The spherical reading has changed slightly so that meant handing glasses over (both pairs) for the lenses to be corrected. Again!

I have the reactolite lenses in one pair and noticed they seemed a lot thicker than my ordinary second pair despite the fact that both pairs should be 1.67. I questioned this and SA went to someone else and came back with the answer that reactolite lenses are thicker than plain lenses due to the coating. Hmmmm. It didn't occur to me until I got home to check my old pair of glasses which have reactolite lenses. Lo and behold those lenses are thin (1.67, same as new pairs) and don't stick out of the frames. I am betting I go again to find another problem as I am pretty certain the new reactolite lenses shouldn't be spilling out from the frame.

  • Hi Ballandchain. The degree of accuracy needed for axis measurements depends on the size of your cyl measurement. With a small cyl 5 degrees of difference in axis measurements will make little difference to the vision (and the axis being 1 degree out certainly wouldn't matter). If you have a very large cyl then you will notice a 5 degree change much more.

as for the thickness of the reactions lenses, that can depend on the frame design as well as the prescription, without seeing your old and new glasses it's hard to say what is going on there.

And many places do not like giving you your PD measurement as they know the only reason you would need to know it is if you are going to order spex online. Obviously they don't want to encourage this, but it is also because the PD measurement is part of the dispensing process, and changes depending on whether you use you glasses for distance or reading. If you are given your general (distance) PD and use this to order reading glasses online they will not be set up correctly for you, and the person who gave you the measurement could be held partly responsible, (although really the person selling you the glasses should physically check your PD, but this is a bit of a grey area with online dispensing)
