Insurance and SIM-Only contracts

I came to the end of my current Orange contract a few months back. I normally upgrade around every 6 months, but I wanted to wait until the Nokia N96 came out to upgrade. Turns out this isn't coming out until at least October time, so I decided I'd try a SIM-Only contract as they are a LOT cheaper, and on a 30-day contract, so once the N96 does finally come out, I can upgrade properly to a normal 12 month contract.
I have been with Orange 10 years or so, and always had Orange Care (and used it every-so-often too). However, they have informed me that I cannot carry this on with a SIM-Only contract.
Are there any decent phone-insurance companies, with low excesses, that will cover an N95 phone that is around 16 months old?
Also, are there any other disadvantages of having a SIM-Only contract?
Many thanks
