I thought it was ketchup for copper and brown sauce for brass?

I have a brass "nose" (that's what it's called -honest!!) on the edge of a step between my kitchen and dining room, with shallow ridges running the length.
looks beautiful when clean but boy does it get dirty quickly. So it has been driving me mad. I've tried all the usual brass cleaners to very little avail, make that to no avail. came across an oldie: citric acid with any household abrasive and magic!!! I haven't named the abrasive in case it's not allowed, (although I'm not associated with the firm) but will if someone tells me it's OK. I used an old toohbrush because of the ridges and the brass is like new and even better cleaning it will no longer be a nightmare

    Hi Erin,

We have an older thread on cleaning brass so I have merged your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together. As always posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

I read in one of my many wedding magazines (before we got married) that to rescue dyed blonde hair gone green from chlorine in the pool to treat it with ketchup and it brings it back to it's original golden glory.

sorry if it's off topic but all this talk of green brass getting restored by the ketchup put me in mind of this little OS gem.

Does anyone know if there's anything i can use to make scratched brass-plated door handles look better? They have been polished up and are nice and shiny but the scratches are terrible? Is there any kind of polish that will act as a kind of colour filler or is that wishful thinking?

What's the best way to clean brass? Have just bought a chalice for ritual use and obviously don't want to go drinking out of it on the odd occasion without it being really clean!
    Any tips appreciated!

    Hi immoral angel,

There's an older thread with lots of advice on cleaning brass that should help. I've merged your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.

Hi guys, hoping you can help.. I have a wooden toilet seat with brass hinges. the problem I have is no matter how much I try to clean them they don't look any cleaner. I really don't want to think how they get so mucky_pale_ . Can you guys give me a hand, would vinegar do it? I have made a new year resolution that this year I will keep on top of housework and must say that the flythread has given me great inspiration. TIA kal25
