Lol harvey! And if they do you've lost a sale without the haggle?0 -
No, because 9 times out of then tney come back later or the next day.
Or I even offer to let them use my laptop to show me just where on autotrader they have seen said car...0 -
Most of the cars an autotrader are overpriced and advertised by chancers anyway who'll eventually drop the price.
Guess the best way is probably to know the usual faults on the car you're looking at, examine it in depth, and highlight any shortcomings and likely costs to put right to the seller.
Or if nothing wrong, ask for a smallish discount, and then ask for extras free on top, like a new MOT, and be prepared to shake hands and give the money. To second hand car dealers a car sold today instead of next month means the space is freed up for another car to sell which can make them more money. More turnover of cars = more money. So sometimes there'll be cars which sit on their forecourt for ages and ages they'll eventually just want shot of and be more willing to discount on. So if you visited 4 months ago, and that Skoda is still there - don't overlook it, give it a good look over, and ask for a big discount0 -
So ... any real life experiences with what has worked and what has not?0

You get right to end of the deal just before signing......then say....what about floor mats/mot/tank of fuel/tow-bar/first service free.
The sales man will be gutted that you almost signed so will probably give away some if it.'Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship'. -Benjamin Franklin.0 -
Thanks in2deep, I'll try that! Anewman, thanks.0

When I went with my mum to buy a new car for here, I found the best thing was research.
We went one week and said to the dealer we were very interested in buying but we wont be buying today. We just want to get an idea of prices and what is out there. He wanted to sell the car there and then, but we stood our ground and were honest and said we wont be buying today. He left us with a price for a new car so we went away and researched on the net and at other dealers around the country and then went back to the original sales man.
We showed him a car for sale at the next towns dealership, which had a higher spec, bigger engine, but a little bit more mileage, that was £1000 cheaper than the one we were interested in that he had for sale. He immediately knocked £1000 off the price there and then. We then haggled a bit more and got the price rounded down, got free mats, full service and were very happy with the overall deal.
So I think research and taking you time over the process is the key. There will always be another car to buy so you wont miss out. If you dont like the pushy sales man then just say "no its not what I want" and walk away.0 -
Also be fully prepared to just walk away if you dont get the deal you want..............................and dont go back.'Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship'. -Benjamin Franklin.0

Brilliant, thanks djhealth & in2deep
we have been researching cars and know approximately how much cars around the age and model are. we are definitely prepared to walk away if we don't get a good deal, equally prepared to sit down and see if a deal can be agreed upon. was feeling nervous about this but now slightly excited!
