MBNA - has anyone else had this happen?

in Credit cards
My husband received a telephone call at work from MBNA yesterday [ we have three credit cards with them, all up to date with payments, and well within their credit limits], was asked several security questions, even though MBNA instigated the call, and was then told that they had reviewed our account, and even though it was up to date in every respect, they were withdrawing our credit card facilty, and we must not use any of our cards again! They quoted Section 15 of their terms and conditions, of which we are not aware of the details, and we have now received three letters this morning, threatening us with confiscation of our cards should we attempt to use them! We are absolutely astounded and angry, not to mention the embarassment which was caused to my husband yesterday due to being phoned at work, where he works in a retail environment with customers present. We are going to pay off our debts with them forthwith and return the cards, and are never going to use or recommend MBNA again. Has anyone else had anything similiar happen to them? Perhaps someone could shed some light on what on earth is going on?

This is section 15 of the T and C's,taken from their website;
15 General
15a We will monitor or record some phone calls.
15b You must send any written notice to us at the address shown in paragraph 5b. We will send any written notice or demand to you at your last-known address. We will always treat you as having received the notice or demand at that address.
15c We may transfer our rights or duties under this agreement or arrange for any other person to carry out our rights or duties under this agreement. You may not transfer any of your rights or duties under this agreement.
15d We will not be liable for:
· anything outside our reasonable control (for example, a failure of computer systems which happens for reasons outside our reasonable control) or any industrial action if this prevents us from providing our usual service;
· any person refusing to accept or honour (or delays in accepting or honouring) any card, card number, cheque, PIN or balance transfer; or
· any cash dispenser failing to issue cash.
We will not be liable for the way in which you are told about any refusal or delay.
15e We can delay enforcing our rights under this agreement without losing them.
15f If we cannot enforce any condition under this agreement, it will not affect any of the other conditions in this agreement.
15g This agreement is governed by the law of England and Wales.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

Have you moved address recently? Because this is the only real item in section 15 which would affect you.0 -
I would be tempted to call MBNA and double check things. Are you certain the call came from MBNA? I never answer any 'security questions' when its the bank calling me. I always refuse and then call them back using a number that I know is safe.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Thank you very much for that information. Well, we moved address 18 months ago, but have been receiving mail here regularly, and paying everything on the dot. I can't see anything there that would mean they can withdraw our facility can you?0

Thank you. But as the call was followed up by three letters this morning, I presume it is genuine?!0

Thank you for all that information. I looked on the website myself, and couldn't find it! I presume all that means they have a right to withdraw their facility at any time they wish?!0

I agree, just because you got letters I would still phone them and check and I would never answer security questions if they called me!!Mortgage-free wannabe!0 -
Thank you all for your advice. I will get my husband to phone them this evening and check, but all the letters look genuine. I just wanted to know if anyone else had ever had this happen, and let others know how MBNA treat their customers. Ironically, for the past few months, MBNA have been ringing us to try and get us to take out a loan! Perhaps they were annoyed we said no! Anyway, there is no chance I will ever be using MBNA again.0

Out of sheer curiosity, would you let us know the outcome of your communications with MBNA? Thanks.This space has been intentionally left blank0
