Dynamode 802.11g router

Options
I'm not a techie so please bear with me, i recently purchased a dynamode 802.11 g mainly because it has a built in firewall, at the moment i have a talktalk modem that i got when i signed up, i've had no problems but just wanted to have better security- i went to get connected but noticed that i still had to run patch lead between router and pc , i was hoping that i would be able to use my laptop on the other side of the room and i assumed that the term wireless meant wireless (i know i'm thick) i'm not to worried but would like to know if this is still better than what i had thanks

Penny, do you have the model number of the Dynamode router? Is this the Dynamode router from eBuyer?

The 802.11g denotes a wireless router so as long as you have a 802.11 wireless-enabled laptop, there should be no need for a cable.

    Penny

you may need to connect to the router with an ehternet cable to do the initial configuration to set up passwords, security etc but once that's done you should be able to connect wirelessly.

I have the same make of router. You will need to connect by cable to start with to get the router to accept the MAC address of the laptop. Then add this to the trusted wireless stations, enable wireless and transmission (I think) of SSID and away you go.
Took me about 20 minutes to figure it all out and about 5 to do it. All without instructions.

Penny, found this on another forum...try this if you are still having problems.

I also had problems using this router on TalkTalk. I could connect to very few websites but most would not display.

Turns out this is an MTU problem in my case.

Check this using ping in a command window. For example:

    ping -l 1400 bbc.co.uk

Keep increasing the value after the -l until the ping is not returned. This gives you the maximum MTU size.

There is no option on the Dynamode to set the MTU size. It needs to be done on each machine on the network. DrTCP does a good job on Windows based machines.

I'm currently using 1300 as an MTU size on my XP and Ubuntu machines and this is working well.
  • I did muck around with MTU's on 2 computers but I found if I changed the router protocol to ppoe instead of ppoa it still worked on talktalk but I didn't get the problem of some sites not responding. ppoe seems to get by without packet size problems. This allowed all my computers to work with changing MTU's
  • Thanks did what you said now working great

I have bought a Dynamode R-ADSL-C4-W-G1 to set up on my parents' PC. They have broadband through Tesco and are running Vista (which I'm not too hot on). I have tried connecting it all up, wires in all the usual places (or so I thought) but can't get an internet connection. I'm not a hopeless techie but a bit lost here. I thought I followed all the instructions (though they're really not easy to follow - not sure what language they are directly translated from!) but can't get an internet connection. Any idiot-proof advice people can give me please?

Parents' current modem is a Thomson Speedtouch 330 which they got from Tesco when they joined their broadband. Have I bought the wrong thing? I wanted them to have internet via broadband as per usual but also to set up a wireless network so I can use my wireless enabled laptop in their spare room when I am staying. They don't mind me using their computer but it's nice to use your own laptop... ;)

HELP OH WISE PEOPLE! Am all kerfuddled...

    Many thanx.

make sure you remove the 330 from the phoneline when you plug in the router and follow the setup instructions.
Vista can be slightly awkward to set up in that it aggressively seeks out network connections and whilst it is doing so will not respond to manual instructions.
Once router is set up with user-name and password for dsl, reboot the vista machine and go have a cup of tea, you may just find it has managed to set itself up ok by then.

    Thanx mdbarber,

I really wasn't sure what I was doing on Vista. Windows XP - now you're talking.
Once router is set up with user-name and password for dsl, reboot the vista machine and go have a cup of tea

Now, the cup of tea bit I get completely :D but not sure I even got as far as finding where to put the dsl username and password!!!

Sorry to bug people again, but can anyone give me English idiot-proof, back-to-basics instructions on how to install my Dynamode R-ADSL-C4-W-G1 modem/wireless router thingy onto a computer with Windows Vista please? I would be most grateful as am totally clueless... I may even buy you a beer to thank you...

    Many thanx.
