Ring the number and said you dailed 1471 as there was a missed call from this number? Ask who they might have rung.... x, y or z and you'll let them know the person rang?
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

Hopefully your bills are itemized, check previous bills for the numbers and who was responsible.

    hi PN,

Yep, there's a few which would be unlikely to be me - a local takeaway at 11pm on a Wednesday night and that the whole phone bill seems to consist of 4 main (mobile) numbers so Im not likely to forget them if I had called them... theyre in the evenings and throughout the day.... the house is a mixed bag and there's no exact timings for anyone (not 9-5 workers etc) so it could be anyone....

there's only one other bill and that had a deficit of £30 on it ..... which the LL says he will cover ... theres a couple of repeat numbers such as a Lancs Constabulary office but no-one claimed it I dont think...

Oh the lovely shared house phone bill....brings back memories
Personally I would get cheap pay as you go to make phone calls on. Saves you running risk of huge bill.

Would be better if landlord did make it incoming only to be honest.

Have you tried googling numbers. I would also try calling landline numbers. try and see if you recongise who answers if not say you are sorting out bill and there a couple of numbers you have had to call as you didn't recongise them. then maybe you can say sorry must have been my housemate bob sarah or peter who called you (if you get my drift) they then might say oh yeah I'm sarahs friend......hey presto theres your answer.

If you don't feel confident doing that then just pretend you pressed redial and when they answer say sorry must have pressed redial by mistake. My housemate must have called you since I last used phone See if you can find out who they know in your house that way.

    Good luck !

I've had something similar (though only a few pounds but enough) that noone in my house (older teens) admitted to. In the end I phoned the numbers of the largest calls and asked who I was speaking to. That way I worked out who had made the calls.

Then I put on call barring to mobiles and noone takes it off. We each have mobiles and use those for calls to mobs so that sorts the problem.

If no one owns up then I would suggest you all pay an even proportion and then have the phone cutoff.

Even if it is incoming only I think people can accept reverse charge calls.

Are you not on good enough terms with these people just to have them own up to having made the calls? You can just put a note up and ask if anyone knows the numbers in question...

Supposably Im the only person to have the code ... and I cant prove that they are reverse charges or that they have somehow bypassed the code.
The way in which the LL has replied seems to be saying that he assumes I am responsible for ALL calls for this reason ... he does mention the Medical centre in the area which one of my housemates comes from but says maybe I left the code off like its my fault in someway.

Your housemates sound irresponsible and rather selfish. Not the kind of people I could share a phone with.

Get it changed to incoming only, and as others have said, get a mobile. It might cost you a little more, but it will save your blood pressure :)
