I'd still take it up with Comet on the Sale of Goods act, as you'd expect the HDMI input to last more than 2 years, and if you've never used it before, then it was obviously faulty to begin with, so they should repair it for free.

tried with comet not budging they are prepared to go to court by the looks of things

If the OP has only just used the HDMI and found out it's not working, can't it be expected that the fault was already there when he bought the television? If it was then I can't see how he'd should have to pay for it. Don't they have to prove that the OP has damaged it in some way?
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Issue proceedings and they will settle straight away as it would not be worth their while defending it.

Have done this with Currys and Dixons...twice.

You need a form N1 from the county court or do it on moneyclaimonline. Sometimes worth a go faxing it to their head office and say that it will be issued at court unless they accept liability within 48 hours.
