Car MOT run out 8 months ago

I don`t know if this is a right place to put this, but here it goes.
I think I`ve been driving without an MOT 8 months now. I am trying to find the papers, but can`t.
I have tryed to find it on the vosa webb, but it does not work on this car, works on the second one.
Is there any other way to check if I have MOT for this year. The thing is I can`t remember wether it`s been done or not.
I don`t want to ring them up only to find that I don`t have it and be fined.

Help greatly appriciated

Why not just have an MOT done now? That would sort out alll your problems...

If you really want to you could call them to ask... There's nothing illegal about owning a car without an MOT. It's just illegal to drive it on the road (other than to/from a pre-booked MOT test appointment). So I don't think you need to worry about calling them.

What do you mean about the website not working? Could it just mean that the car doesn't have an MOT, or is it actually showing an error?

Hi, Did you get the last MOT done, or is this a " just bought car with mot already done" Because if you can remember which Garage did the mot, then phone them up and explain that you cannot find the mot, you will have to pay them for a duplicate mot certificate. I think that it would be about £8-10
If you have just bought the car with the mot already done, ask the person who you bought the car from, maybe they might remember which garage did the test on it. Hope thats some sort of help to you... Good luck.

Back in 2002 my previous car's MOT was due at the start of October, normally I'm on the ball with these things but my Dad died from his cancer in September and it was December before I though about cars realised I was without MOT. Anyway, got it done ASAP, no problems or fines.

when did you last tax it? You would have had a valid MOT then - if that is any help in reminding you.....

Just take it in and get it done asap - driving without would (I think) void your insurance.

Under the "new" system it is very easy to miss that your MoT has expired. When you tax your car on-line you don't have to produce your paper MoT, so you don't look at it and note when it is due for renewal. Easy target for a fine.
If I was being cynical - another stealth tax ?

It doesn't necessarily void your insurance. A few years ago I had an accident in a car with no MOT and I was still covered. Totally my own fault it wasn't MOT'd as well.

It's really annoying that they send reminders for the VED but not the MOT which is actually a basic safety check.

  • i actually drove around for 12 months with no MOT and got stopped and they didnt realise at the time

I took my car to the dealer and asked for an MOT and service, they did both ( i was charged for both on the invoice) however 12 months later when i came back to get it re mot'd it turned out they never actually isssued me with the certificate! I think i would of got away with it in court as i had proof from a main dealer that i had paid for one, silly that i jsut didnt check that the mot cert was actually in my wad of stuff they gave me.

This was in the days before it was all computerised!
  • Just get an MOT done now if you can't find the docs - it's only £35 from some places and means you have the next 12 months worry free - plus no chance of a fine!

Why can't you find out on the VOSA website? Confused?? Also, when was the car last taxed? Make sure you don't forget about that one.
