I have been with Scottish Power for years and decided to switch last year when my capped rate ended. I was tempted into BG for dual energy supplier (what a mistake!!)

I paid SP £100per month for gas/elec for years and always seemedto be in credit at the end of the year.

I live in a 2 bedroom circa 1900 semi (not terribly efficient,) but then again not extortionate at £100 per month.

I now have to pay £240 a month to BG just to stand still for the energy I use and that is not taking into account the deficit I have found myself in because I haven't really checked my bills vigilantly and BG have not amended my DD until now.

It equates to me having to pay almost £500 per month for the next 8 months to keep on top of my energy usage and pay off the debt.

Has energy really gone up that much or am I being totally fleeced by BG. My latest elec bill puts my Kw/hr price at 10p. Does this seem right?

Is everyone in an average sized fmaily house having to pay £2500 to £3000 per year to run their home.

I don't believe it !!!!!!!!!! (Victor Meldrew lives) Please share your experience so that I know I am one of a crowd and not being singled out for Fuel extortion.

10p per kWh is about average for electricity, yes.

Some charge considerably more! e.g eon wanted over 25p before I switched!!! (E7 tier 1 rate)

If it helps, about £1200 per year is the average energy bill per household

In a 2 bed semi you would not expect to pay more than £100 a month, if you usage is fairly normal.

You really need to look and see what you consumption in kWh has been since you moved to BG.

BG dual fuel on their standard rates is a bit higher than SP - but not by a huge amount - and their internet account Click 5 is pretty competitive.

Just a bit of further info. My last quarter March to June 08, both taken from accurate readings has put my elec usage at 4209 units for 91 days. 126 @ 0.22708p ansd 4083 @ 0.09822p. This has given me a bill of circa £400 quid for 1 quarter. Is this high because of price increase or is something in my house eating elec.

I do not have any weird appliances different to any other household and I don't think I am paying for the street lighting.

    Any advice

This is VERY high. The average annual consumption is 3300! I think you need to check if you have any faulty appliances.

Thanks Joyful, but 3300 units per annum seems remarkably low to me. This would give an average annual elec bill of cira £360 or £30 per month. Surely that isn't correct compared to my astronomical bill.

Also how would a faulty appliance use more elec?? and how do i check if an appliance is running correclty that it is faulty. Surely a fault would mean that it does not work, hence rendering it very efficient

    Unsure!!! Grateful of further comments.

Do you have gas central heating or is it electric storage heating?

    Joyful is right,

the average for single rate electricity is 3,300 kWh/year. If you have 2 rate (electric heating) the average is 6,600 kWh/year - still well below what you are using.
Some people will use more, some less.
What is your gas bill like?
Do you use electricity for heating?
Do you have a (ahem) garden in your loft?

You were on a fixed rate with SP so no matter who you went with you would have seen a big jump (I'm dreading 2010). Do you still have old SP bills to compare the kWh?

I have gas central heating. The only 'electric eating' appliance I have, I suppose, is a Tumble Dryer. The Elec underfloor heating in the conservatory has not been on for the last quarter so it can't be that.

I am using on average 3.4kw of elec constantly for 14 hours per day (taking out the evening when everything is generally switched off) I cannot see how or why and I certainly cannot keep getting £450 elec bills per quarter.

Can this be right or am I missing something or being scammed somehow? I am baffled.

If you are using that much electricity that is the problem, not the supplier.

Try turning everything off, then on one by one to see if you can spot a guilty appliance.
Try speaking to the energy efficiency people at BG.

You would think so the amount I am using, unfortunatley not, although I feel I need the wacky baccy to helpme cope with these bills!!!!

I have Gas CH, and just cannot understand the extortionate bills. I think I will check my previous SP bills to try and collate the quarterly usgae in say 2006 and 2007 to see if I can see a significant jump.

If 3300 is average annual consump then 4400 just cannot be right for 1 quarter. Will BG not look at bills and usage if they crop us as unusually high, or are they just quite happy to take your money and drown in your own energy usage until an apparent problem is found??
