Tesco Broadband - any good?

Options
I'm on dial up with Tesco, paying £12.49pm.
On top of this I pay BT £11pm for the phone line and about £1 pm on calls.
I have a PAYG mobile on which I spend about £2pm.
TOTAL: £26.49 per month on dial-up internet, landline phone and mobile.

I am looking for broadband since I want to work from home. It's important to me to have a reliable phoneline - this is priority over cost.

I don't want to download movies or music - would 512k standard broadband be OK or should I go for up to 1MB or 2MB. If I want the higher levels this would cost £17.97 per month or £19.97 if I want a 6 - 20GB download limit... sorry for being thick, but what would I want to download other than music or movies?

I've read Martin's article read through this site, but can't find anything about Tesco broadband. I can get Tesco broadband for £9.97 pm for the first six months and £17.97 thereafter - tying myself into a twelve month contract.

I don't want any television packages. Do you think Tesco Broadband is OK? I've not seen anything negative about reliability which puts me off Tiscali and TalkTalk.

I would be very, very grateful for any feedback. I hope I've given all the information you need, if not - please ask!

I've had Tesco bb since it started, was a dial-up customer before that. Apart from one outage at the very beginning and one problem a couple of years ago when everything went kaput in Manchester I can certainly recommend it.
  • Thanks so much for such a swift response.

I'm not sure if I should go for 512k with download limit as 'none' or go for 1MB which would cost almost double. What difference does the 1MB make over 512k for someone like me who won't be downloading music or movies?

    Sorry for all the questions!

I was on the 512k with no download limit which was the only option when I signed up then last year changed it to 1mb and to be quite honest I really haven't noticed any difference. I only use email and the internet, very seldom download and then only music so I'd go with the 512k. You can always change your package at a later date but this then ties you in for a further 12 months.

Don't forget to have your club card handy when signing up as you'll get your points on your monthly payment.

If you are going to use your broadband connection for work then you should go for a business broadband package.
    Tesco T&Cs state:
Please note that Tesco internet access is a residential service which is made available to you only for personal use and not for commercial or business purposes.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I was with Tesco BB 512kb for 3 yrs, no problems whatsoever. I have now left them because I don't think £17.97 for 512kb is value for money nowadays. Must you go for Tesco? I am now with Sky for £5.00 for upto 8mb speed, also a good deal at the moment is O2 if you have an O2 mobile it is only £7.50 per mth.

I used to be on Tesco Broadband and never had any problems with them, but I still had to pay for my line rental and calls with BT so it was not very cheap. Changed to Talk Talk 15 months ago and have had no problems to date with them either

I often work from home and see no reason to treat my internet as business use when my phone is a personal line.
  • Thanks!

I'll sleep on this and make a decision tomorrow. I don't have an 02 mobile and am not that convinced by TalkTalk - but this I need to consider.. The Sky deal looks good - will look at that too. With the Tesco deal being £9.97 pm for the first six months and £17.97 thereafter the year cost is £13.90ish per month. Would love to NOT put any more money in Tesco pockets so shall reconsider.

Thanks again everyone. All comments very much appreciated.

 You need your bumps felt if you consider Tiscali. I have had 4 months of total hassle. Their system is great when it works, but their customer services are the worst form of ISP you could think of. Most of their call centres are in India, and they read from a script, and are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. You hang on an 0871 line for hours and thy cannot pass you to the right department for your problem, so you have to redial and listen to their music, all at 10p a minute, or 5p per minute if you are on a tiscali line.

If you don't believe me, look on the separate thread on this website. There are pages of complaints.

I hope you find this useful.
