Well the latest update is that they have been allowed to spend tonight in the property, EH will service the notice tomorrow and then there are 2 possible outcomes depenant on the landlord:
1. Landlord puts them in a hotel or house while the work is done
2. Landlord says he can't do the works in the timescale given and serves them notice to be out on the same day!
I don't know who is advising them (I did suggest they call Shelter), I think its mostly the TRO who they are getting the information from. I thought your AST was supposed to protect you against this kind of thing, but apparently not :-(
I don't think they are getting the correct advice, don't rely too much on what someone at the council is telling you, they either have their own agenda or haven't a clue!
This is quite complicated and they need the very best advice, they must phone Shelter, they are the experts.Loretta0 -
Latest update...their contract has been ended and they're looking for somewhere else to live.
I have no idea if they followed advice and talked to Shelter... all the advice they were being given was from the letting agency and Environmental Health - which is a bit silly really coz the agency is biased and EH aren't experts! There's not much more I can do really - I've passed on all the advice given here (several times in fact!) but I can't force them to take it!
I'm getting rather frustrated now with the whole thing and wish I hadn't got so involved trying to help them as they don't appear to be listening to a word I've told them. Thanks everyone on here who has offered advice - I've certainly found it interesting and useful, even if it wasn't followed :-(0 -
its lovely that you tried to help your friends - never mind that they did not take the advice - you tried - thats all thats important.0

Ok I know I should leave this alone now, but it seems I can't. Latest news is that EH served a "Prohibition Order". Landlord ended the contract immediately and is paying them £200 compensation, and providing a hotel for 2 nights (but the cost of the hotel will be taken out of the compensation!).
Good news though is that I think that I've maybe convinced one of the girls to call Shelter for expert advice at last!0
