AVG 8 - How to get a succesful installation?

Options
With the impending deadline coming up for AVG 7.5 cut-off I'm sure like many who have been holding off its time to go for 8. Was wondering what peoples experiences about the best trouble free upgrade procedure would be.

Install from dowload or save to harddrive?
Install over 7.5 or uninstall 7.5 first?

If you had a successful trouble free upgrade how about posting here how you did it. Never know maybe we can find a way to the "perfect" transition

The deadline is hardly impending. You've got until the end of this year (ie 31/12/2008).

Also there's no pressing reason why you have to stick with AVG. The whole trend and market could be quite different in six months time anyway.

Presumably you uninstalled any previous anti virus program first.

  • I tried the installation first just to make sure it wasnt corrupt before uninstalling my old anti-virus software. Good thing to as it said there was a corrupt file and to download again.

All I did was download it again. Ran it again and when it got to the screen warning that there was already anti-virus software installed I quit.

Unpluged my PC from the modem and uninstalled then installed AVG8 and all is well.

I installed AVG 8 for a friend the other day. The only problem we had was that the installer that Ewido Antispyware installed which needed removing before the install could proceed
The machine did have AVG antispyware so we removed this, no joy.
It transpired that Ewido was on the machine so years prevoiusly had been upgraded to AVG but had left an entry in the registry, once this was removed all was well.

AVG is much slicker than the old version and includes Antispyware as well.

Hey penrhyn. I used to use Ewido when it was free. Have long since uninstalled it but have a sneaky feeling something is still on my computer. How do I make sure it has all been removed? If it involves the Registry, I have always had a firm rule "do not go there" so please spell out in words of one syllable any involvement I need to have in that area!!
    Many thanks.

Until it's causing a known problem don't bother, you could end up making things incredibly worse. There's only one surefire way to make sure your system is properly clean of that kind of thing and that's a fresh reinstall of the operating system. Which is obviously overkill for most.

Agreed, don't do anything in the registry unless you really know what you are about.

Check if ewido is still in your program list, if so try uninstalling it.

Hi penrhyn. Yes it is still in the programme list. Will try uninstalling. Is it best to do this from add/remove programs? It seems to have a link to my AVG - is it still going to be ok to uninstall?
