Playstation 3 woes…

I have a 60Gb Playstation 3 purchased in December 2007, ie just 6 months old. Until yesterday, this played PS1 and PS2 games with no problems.
On trying to use a PS2 game yesterday, it just hangs with a black screen once the game is ran, ie doesn’t even get to the PS2 splash screen.
Checked the OS updates and noted that 2.36 was available – upgraded from 2.35 to 2.36. The same symptoms are still present.
I’ve tried resetting everything to their default settings – no cure. I also thought it may have been the laser gone slightly out of alignment, but it still plays PS1 and PS3 games and I’ve also tried a DVD film, which plays successfully. All the PS2 games tried result in the PS3 hanging pretty much immediately.
I’ve already fired off an e-mail to Sony, plus I’ll contact them come Monday, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had any problems similar to this or may have any ideas what may be wrong?
Thanks in advance,
FB.

have you tried creating a new virtual memory card and assigning it to slot 1?.
if you have a near enough full hard drive, try deleting some of the data as when you select the ps2 game, the console reboots into the ps2 mode afaik and it may not have enough memory to load the ps2 emulator.
if it still doesnt work, try switching it off (at the switch on the back) for 5-10 mins. im not too sure if this will work but its worth a try0 -

Thanks for the replies....
I've tried a good number of PS2 games - 10+. These PS2 games have been working and some of them we used last week when we took our PS2 on holiday with us.
Apparently there's two lasers in the PS3 - one for the PS1 / PS2 / audio and DVD titles and the other just for Blu-Ray. As the PS1 titles are working, it's unlikely (but not 100% guaranteed) to be a hardware issue.
Shortly after I posted this question I received an e-mail from the Playstation care team. They have suggested I do a full PS3 system restore, selecting full format as there may be some software corruption somewhere along the line.
Having just backed up data and started this off, it reported that it will take around 3hrs 53 minutes to to a full re-format of the hard disc and restore to factory default. Care team correspondent thinks this is likely to cure it, but failing that, I should get a replacement under the 12 month warranty as it's barely 6 months old.
I'll report back how I'm doing - probably after 9pm this evening...
Thanks again,

Wonder if they actually physically have the stock to give you a replacement (as opposed to the newer/only current 40GB model, which ironically can't play PS2 games anyway)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

what sony do with broken 60gb models is they swap the cases and refurb someone elses old ps3 and send that out to you afaik0 -
Hmmm
Restore doing a full hard disc reformat didn't work. Just had a game of Gran Turismo (PS1), but Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (PS2) just causes a hang. Created the internal memory cards too...
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is just installing to HD now, which I guess means the PS3 games are still working.
Guess another call to Playstation careline is in order.
@gaming_guy - I specifically asked if they could supply a replacement 60Gb. The answer I got was that despite using new bits of stock, eg case, HD, motherboard etc, they have to be called reconditioned, as they're not selling 60Gb's any more. Was assured that I'd effectively be getting a new replacement system - well at least that's what I was told.
