I've finally got the other quotes in after much nagging and chasing and there is less than £200 between the highest and lowest. I'm very surprised that there is so little difference and have decided to go with the original firm cos they have a good reputation for being reliable and speedy.

my mum just had a quote from british gas and they were going to charge her £4700. well luckily for her my father in law is a gas inspector and is doing the work himself with his mate, but thats still going to cost her £1600, so i don't tjink your quote is actually that bad!

I suggest thats a good price for a boiler quote. We looked for a while trying to get the best boiler estimate and the quote we got in the end we were very happy with. We paid a similar price and were very happy with the work. There was some system pipework changes that needed doing and the work looked very involved.

I would also advise that you let the plumbing company supply all materials (yes they may add a markup, but they also take all the responsibility)

If you do decide to source the boiler and materials yourself to reduce the quote here are a couple of good websites I looked up:

www.mrcentralheating.com for boiler packs ie radiators and boiler packs

www.boiler-sales.co.uk owned by the same company I presume, just boilers

www.heatcodirect.com overall cheaper than above two, some of the cheapest prices I have found on the internet.

It might also be a good idea to do some research as I found this experience quite exhausting and daunting to be perfectly honest. You really need someone who can reassure you they know exactly what they are doing. What kept coming up time and time again is finding a good installer. Once a boiler has been installed incorrectly it will give problems for the rest of its life. There are probably lots of plumbing companies out there who will not represent value but there are lots that will.

I found this very long and informative article which I mentioned to someone else:

If you supply your own materials you won't get any warranty on them from the installer. You may end up with a manufacturer call out charge of up to £200 if you think the boiler is faulty when it wasn't.

The quotes you have got seem pretty good to me, only thing is I wouldn't entertain any Vaillant 400 series. The worst that Vaillant make, especially if fitted on an open vent system.

I've was looking around for a replacement boiler for a while as I wanted to get one of the more energy efficient A-rated boilers.

I ended up going for the ecoTEC plus which is SEDBUK Band 'A' rated. I've been really pleased with it so far - only been a few weeks though. I would definately recommend the ecoTEC plus to anyone who want to reduce their energy bills.

    hope this helps :)

also remember it's not CORGI any more, it's Gas Safe you need to look out for.

just for your info you can't buy a boiler that isn't A rated anymore.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • to get an idea, you can compare with boiler prices on getproquotes.co.uk
