Along the same lines - I received something last week that was addressed to me but the invoice inside had a different address on it. The label was printed by the courier so obviously the error was theirs.
I, in some moment of madness, contacted the seller and told them I had their item. They offered to send the courier to collect but not at a time convenient to me. Now they are suggesting that I post it back to them through the post office.

I won't say what it is but its fairly expensive and I would have liked to keep it, unfortunately I developed a conscience for 5 minutes :)

    What would you have done?

The kind of thing I'd do. But in this case we can't think how they'd even have my dad's name and address to mistake it with anyway in the first place. He orders things so infrequently that it doesn't take much tracking or checking to account for every one of his past sellers not being the source. Even if it were, how do you mistakenly use an address you used once at least a couple of years ago? And why no followup contact to correct the "mistake".:confused::confused:

    Very odd

One reason I always include a packing/delivery document.

As the packing/delivery document always matches the buyer to the item, (system generated) no matter how I mix things up*, no one can construe the items were intended as unsolicited goods.

*unless I mess things up completely and put the wrong delivery note with the wrong item and then send to someone different to that specified on the delivery note - in which case I probably deserve to lose the item.

It's the only logical thing I can come up with. But it still raises those questions that I can't even hypothetically answer. Who on Earth could it be since my dad hasn't bought anything in ages and there's no apparent selling of any of his past ebay sellers (unless they've generated new user IDs but then they'd have had to have moved away from ebay since I didn't find those items being sold by a single seller on the whole of ebay). And why no followup from this seller to ask if we accidentally received the items. Unless THAT letter ironically got lost in the post or the seller is so disorganised he's actually lost our addess that he sent them to after sending the original Jiffy bag. Whenever I try to rationalise it it still starts getting far fetched or unusual. I'd just love to know out of curiosity what the real answer is but I doubt we'll ever know.

Maybe he was in a hurry, sent it to number 43 instead of number 34 and because he was in a hurry lost the Proof of Postage, and so just refunded the buyer when he got an INR dispute.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

But how did the sender know the name of the person who lived at 43?

Well firstly it was specifically to my dad and he hasn't bought anything from anyone in years so not sure why if it's a previous seller they still even have the address never mind mix it up. Secondly it can't be actually through ebay since those items weren't sold by a single seller (I've searched). And so it'd more likely just be a personal sale which makes it all the more confusing how they mixed it up.

Exactly. It was actually addressed to J K Bloggs, while my dad's directory listing in the phone book is Joe Bloggs. So where did they get my dad's initials from? Must be someone that has got the details from somewhere, but if I remember correctly even the postmark was in an area my dad's never had any dealings with at all.

    Just a thought......

Does your Dad ever enter competitions?

Often packages are sent out without any note from sender. If you look on the 'I won I won I won' board you'll see it even happens with expensive items. More than one person has received a laptop without any clue where it's come from.

Although your Dad's not a gamer he may have received a runner up prize

Firstly no he doesn't and secondly as I mentioned they're OEM (i.e. bundled with something else versions). There's absolutely no way they'd offer them by themselves in a competition. I mean who offers secondhand OEM computer games in a competition, not sure it'd even be legal in terms of licensing?
