Breakfast cereal - any ideas for cheap alternatives?

OH mixes his own muesli each day, we have a load of jars with various nuts and seeds in, also dried fruit e.g. dried apple slices, you could use raisins etc and use a basic oat base. Then he adds whatever fresh fruit he wants to. He does add some natural yoghurt on if we've got some at the time.
We find it works out far cheaper than buying the pre-packed muesli, and also he gets variety with picking different things and different fresh fruit.0 -
If the kids like bread, why not invest in a breadmaker and pop it on a timer so it's ready when you wake up? You can add fruit etc too. My daughter often has fruit bread with banana for breakfast.
Scotch pancakes are good too - if you can make in bulk one night andf freeze, you just need to get them out the night before. They're great with syrup and various fruits - in fact tins of pie filling, while not overly healthy, are very nice!
Mornflake do a huge bag of 'superfast' oats that you just need to nuke in the microwave for two minutes. You can shove oats and milk in a blender to get more of a 'ready brek' texture that kids sometimes prefer.I like you. I shall kill you last.0 -
Mainly Sainsburys' Basics Fruit and Fibre.....
Is the Basics F&F any good? I currently buy the Sainsbury's own brand one, but after my bowl this morning had about 3 flakes of coconut and the rest just bran flakes, I'm wondering if there's any difference between the 'fruit' content of that and the basics version, which says something like 'more fibre, less fruit' on the box?0 -
Sainsburys' Basic bran flakes are good and their basics dried mixed fruit is only 41p a bag (500g)
Home made fruit and fibre
Never thought about porridge in a slow cooker, that's a great suggestion.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

Thanks all! Lots of great advice here! Basics Fruit and Fibre is fine! Less fruit than Kelloggs, but goes down well with my lot.
I do have a breadmaker and make bread - but I need it for making school dinners so I'd need two breadmakers if they were going to eat bread in the morning too.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
