Help! Laptop running very slow!

Hi,

Can anyone help? My laptop is running so very, very slow and I cant find out why? Can anyone advise on a free diagnostic tool that I can use - please bear in mind I am not very techy, so it needs to be easy to understand and follow!

Thanks in advance,

Karen

I would be inclined to think it is SpyWare. Download AdAware and SpyBot. Run one first and then the other and see what they find. Don't forget to update them before you start the scan.

Are you using an anti-virus? Is it up-to-date?

  • Hi,

Thanks for replying - I have cccleaner, spybot and AVG 8 installed and all are up to date so don't think its spyware...

Give AdAware a try. One will often find something that the other misses, and in my experience, it finds more than SpyBot.

before you do anything else do this IN THIS ORDER

open internet explorer and go to tools-internet options-delete browser history-cookies-tempory internet files!

    empty recycle bin

remove any program you never use (yes including those ones you think you may use but never do) BE HARSH AND REMOVE THEM!!!!

DEFRAG the hard drive (right click on hard-properties-tools-defrag hard drive! this can take ages depending on the size of your drive)

    restart the PC

if its still slow download a program called super antispyware free edition (yes its completely free) and make sure its fully upto date and run a scan for spyware (i can pretty much promise this will bring up lots of spyware that will slow your machine down)

then come back and let me know how it went

I suspect its AVG 8 as it goes, slows my boot up right down !!

    http://review.zdnet.com/internet-security-firewall/avg-antivirus-8/4505-3667_16-32887573.html

And in boot speed, AVG Anti-Virus 8 came in toward the slower end, with a fast 37.95 seconds

remove AVG by clicking Start , Then Control Panel then ADD/Remove programs

    then download and install

turn off in the options of AVG 8 to scan on boot and you'll find it runs faster (do you really need to scan when you start the PC?? )
