    Hi

I'd take from this a learning point, to keep quiet about jobs you are applying for.

There's nothing you can do now apart from continue the process, be 100% positive and keen and flexible.

And be gracious whoever gets the job. You, her or someone else...

Thanks everyone for your opinions, pretty much everything people have said I've been running through my head for the last week.

Just to clarify - I didn't ever have a problem with her applying and yes I did say to her she should apply. What's upset me is the way she's gone about it.

Also to clarify, the job is in local government and so there is an issue with canvassing as the process is meant to be open and transparent!

The baby issue - I have a young child myself whi's 2 so I'm not unsympathetic to her wanting to go back to work and understand why she wants the job.

Anyway the closing date is today so both of us should hear in the next week whether we've got interviews. Then it will get really interesting!

As a civil servant, who has also applied for jobs in local government, all I can say is:

If you were the better candidate I'm sure you'd get the job.
But it doesn't work like that does it. It's who you know, not what you know.

If it's a level playing field, then fine. But the 'friend' has been clandestine regarding her efforts to beat her friend. And knowing this, the OP might go into the interview feeling that it's game over, try to over-impress and feel badly about her effort.

    It sucks.

    Go for it :)

You never know, they may actually have found her to be very arrogant and presumptuous about getting her old job back ;)

And very possibly just fobbed her off with that excuse.
Yes, it's difficult to get sacked from Govt-style jobs... maybe they were really grateful when she left.

    Had a big party!

I've worked in Local Government and even though the jobs were advertised internally they were already ear marked for someone already in that department. Outsiders didn't stand a chance.

Which is an appalling waste of applicants' time and money. Not to mention raising hopes.

This does go on and it's pretty unfair not to mention a waste of time and resources, the same goes for jobs advertised externally going to someone who already works there, I think it happens in all sectors?

In OP's case I think her friend is full of it-3 years is a long time to be away from a job and unless she's very pally with management she's bluffing. If it were hers on a plate and she's so well regarded why didn't she know about the job already, surely she'd still be in touch with the firm? I think she knows you are competition so I would call her bluff and say how you're really exited and up for the challenge!
