Water Bill?

Hi,

We moved into a three bed town house three months ago and we are on a meter. Two adults who work all day and we are probably considered low users.

So imagine my shock when a £360 hit the mat the other week. Well shock turned into laughter as I thought it MUST be an error. Well, my husband phoned United Utilities the other day who say "no, that's right, about £120 a month for your usage."

Now I know bills have gone up but this seems ludicrous to me, any advice? Is it at all likely that this is our actual usage or is this just a big joke at UU's end?

Thanks,

check your meter readings, it is way over the top. My husband is in
all day, i am in evnings and weekends and our water bill (by meter) is only
£20 per month in 3 bedroom semi. Dont take their word for it. If you dont get any joy from
them, contact ofwat, the telephone number should be on UU's bill.
they are clearly wrong so i wouldnt worry too much
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You are probably paying for some of the previous occupants water!!

The average consumption is around 60 cubic metres per person per year.

So for 2 people for 3 months that would equate to 30 cubic metres. You can check the cost of that on the website.

Are the readings right? Is the initial reading the same as the one you took when you moved in? [You did take initial readings of all meters when you moved in and kept them didn't you?]

Could you have a leak somewhere, that's swallowing up all the water?

I had a friend (abroad though) who landed a bill for well over £1000 when an underground pipe burst, in turn causing damp in the foundations of the house which had to be repaired.

I believe you're responsible for all maintenance on your side of the meter - so get someone round to check quick sharp!

We are renting and the agent took readings, which we initialled, but we didn't get copies so we are requesting them. However dealing with United Utilities isn't easy so I expect a long struggle for this one!!

Did you double check them as correct? Good move to get the copies. However always remember that any error on intermediate readings can easily be put right but you are stuffed if you didn't take and keep the entry and exit readings.

The other thing is to check that the meter you are being billed for is the one being read is the one supplying you.
