I have been trying to set up my new Phillips SNK56000 wireless router. When i put the installation disk in i get to a screen which asks how i would like to connect to the internet. On that screen it asks for my ADSL username and password which it says it would have been provided by my ISP. I think i can remember having it when i was first connected to NTL (Virgin Media) though that was around three years ago and i have no idea where those details would be.
I rang Virgin Media and spoke to a man who told me that i get my ADSL username and password from Phillips and so i'd have to ring them.
I explained that he might have been on about the routers username and password to get into the settings of it though he said he wasnt on about that and advised to ring up Phillips.
I'm really confused about where to get my ADSL username and password from now.
If anyone could advise anything or help me in any way it would be appreciated.
Thanks.

You won't be surprised to hear that the Virgin Media "Help" desk operator is talking rubbish, and is confusing (or choosing to confuse to make his life easier) the username/password that you use to login to the router with your Broadband username and password.
It's probably best to call them back and hope you get someone who is less of a fool at the other end.
Alternatively, you might try looking for the letter that NTL sent you when you joined, as most ISPs give your username and password in their Welcome letter.0 -
Thank's for the quick reply. To be honest i wasn't suprised because the man i spoke to just kept rambling on most likely to keep me on the phone at 50p a minute.
I'll give them another call and let you know how i get on.
Lets not hope i get the same person eh'.:rotfl:
Thankyou0 -
if your email address was joe.bloggs@virgin.net, your broadband username would be joe.bloggs@adsl.virgin.net. You only need to use your broadband login when you set up your modem, password is the same for both

Are you using ADSl (via BT line) or cable? They require 2 different types of router. SNK-5600 is for cable, so not sure why it is asking for ADSL info.
I'm not too sure i think its cable though how would i know? Basically i have a NTL broadband modem then im routing the connection from that to the router so i connect to my PC and PS3 at the same time. I havent even got to the installation of the USB adaptor yet.0 -
You say you have a NTL broadband modem. Is it plugged into the phone socket or using the same cable as the set top box?
If it is the phone line then you have the right router. If it is the same as the set top box then you need a different router (not an ADSL one).
Also, if it is the same cable as the set top box then you don't need a username or password for it to work.0 -
I rang Virgin Media again and spoke to a quite helpfull man. He knew exactly what i was on about and asked for the account details which i gave him. He asked for the account holders name (which is my mum) and then he said if the account holder isn't there then he cant give me the information i need because of data protection.
My mum is on holiday so its not possible. I'm just going to have to wait.
Unless i put on a womans voice. :rotfl:
Thanks for the help.0 -

Just ring back and give your name as your mothers - they won't know! Some women have gruff voices - so no worries - they're not going to challenge it.0 -

When you say an NTL broadband modem, It sounds to me like you've got either the silver ntl home 100 or the blue one, which iirc was the 250, but it was years ago I had cable so my memory's fuzzy. Either of those are cable modems.
VM/NTL/TW did/do adsl as well though, so what you're calling the broadband modem could be a dsl modem. If you're managing to connect it to your router, it's ALMOST definitely ethernet, so all you'd have to do is connect it to the uplink/wan port on your router.
If it's a standard ethernet router (as in its uplink is ethernet) then it shouldn't be asking you for a password apart from logging into the router to config it. The device that's plugged into its uplink port may well need your username and password set, but it's the modem's config page that should be asking you, not the router's.
Double check whether what you have is cable internet or dsl, and if this is the router you've got. Tell us what your NTL modem is as well.

Sorry if i'm being silly but what is a set top box ?
My modem is a blue NTL one and has a long black cable coming from the brown box on the front of the house connected to it. Then from the modem there is a blue ethernet cable going to my PC (that's how it is when im using the internet just for my PC).0 -

Ok, so it's definitely an ethernet modem, and almost definitely cable.
You won't have or need to enter your username/password into the router.
Sounds to me like the setup disc either has setups for their adsl routers as well, or you've got the wrong router.
How many ethernet ports are there at the back of the router?
All you should need to do is plug your blue NTL modem into your router (the uplink port! this bit's important), and log into the router to set up the wireless settings, dhcp etc.
You don't strictly need the setup CD, and in this case it's only confusing the matter.
Turn the PC off. Turn the router off. Turn the modem off.
Turn them on in modem/router/pc order.
This should let the modem connect to VM's network and get an IP etc. Then the router will ask the modem for an IP etc. Then your PC will ask the router for the same.
Next you need to connect to the router and set it up. it'll be http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.100.1 or something similar. Finding out its ip address take a little detective work, but you can find it out by checking the settings for your pc. Network connections/local area connection in the control panel on XP. You're on your own finding it in vista though.
If you double click local area connection and go to the support tab, your router's IP will be the default gateway.
go to http://your router's ip address
Login with its default username and password, admin/admin or root/root or whatever. It'll be in the manual or on a sticker on the box or the router.
