I had 5 dogs all in 3 girls a 2 boys and with every litter we called the taxman and they confirmed i wouldnt have to pay tax as the income is too little, yes we all have gripes with puppy farms but buyers should be aware most puppy farms have more that 2 breeds sometimes up to 5 and wont show the parents of the pups, most of the breeders i know can always show mum but i could show them both, even breeders listed via the kennel club do advertise pups in the papaer and there is nothing wrong with that.
But there is a differance between breeders and puppy farms, lets not get mixed up and tag the breeders as bad.
Ive been about the "scene" for years , even had a hand in running national clubs advising at high level on things here and in europe , so yes I see the worst of it , no-one likes to accept what they are and all call the other ones FARMERS.The snob breeder blames the back street breeder for all that is wrong , the kennel club blames everyone yet doesnt enforce its OWN rules on registrations and the govt and media only see a problem when they want a blame hound to get votes or sell papers.
For people to breed dogs , especially like one of the posters above its for money regardless of what they say....if not then give the dogs away FOR NOTHING ...its pretty apt giving that the site is about making or saving money.I hope that these matters are given close supervision , animals and livestock are banned from ebay for HUMANE reasons.
As for puppy farms , 2-4 bit ches in a kennel enviroment listed above sounds pretty like it .....but they dont like to be called what they are...profitteers off the backs of animals , if all the animnals they own arent in their house then they are not members of the family but tools.
As for the original poster yes if you dont have them sold TO order then its ill advised , if you dont know how to do it then YOU havent done it right , therefore ITS easy to show HOW its BEEN for the money.
IF anyone wants a staffy for nothing all they need to do is go to a rescue where the end result of these people are there and take one home for less than 50 quid , a lot less than the 400 that the original poster is probably asking for.
RULE of thumb is if its not through a club , if its not sold word of mouth in most cases before its born , then its pure profit and the seller will do a hot potato.Clubs though can be as corrupt as the people running them , but at least less than advertises in yellow papers.
THis post originally started out as how to get an idea for kennel names , now its about sales techniques , I think it proves itself and I beleive that places like ebay show the way and thus dont allow the selling of animals for that reason....HOPEFULLY its in the rules of the mse that animals and its using them for profit ie advertising is against its rules.
Just for interest I have reported on numerous occasions breeders using the free press for adverts that some mention using above , reasons including fake animal papers , ikc and not kc papers , mongerels sold as pedigree and fighting dogs....so they are in good company.0 -
Hi Webhamster
I am not disputing that some may use it as a profit making thing, however that has never been a concern to us, if it was, we would have chosen a totally different breed to show than the one we do, we have people waiting all over the world for pups from our dogs and 99% of them go to show homes, however showing is our main interest and very rarely do we breed unless we want to keep something from the litter ourselves.
I deplore puppy farmers myself but there are some very good caring breeders out there who adore their dogs and are treated as part of the family.Nobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

hi rush ,
I know kind show people that you speak of , show people that only show and not breed , people whom run clubs for the benefit of the breed and yet have only bred 12 pups in 35 years for example....decent folk are in the minority , and I am inlcuidng at the top level especially.Myself included never having BRED through a !!!!! or studded my desired dog to someone that I dont think it would do any benefit to their line.
The first place I always tell someone to go for a sbt is a rescue and never a breeder , and as I mention all too often if theres pups out back instead of in the home then its not thought of as a pet or a member of the family but a cash cow.
Ive know experts in the breed (and LONG in the tooth) shout about back st peddlers yet they have sold hundreds of dogs and coached business partners in doing the EXACT same as they do , yet its always the back st breeder thats putting too many pups out there.
Over saturated market drives down price , for that reason those that run breed clubs , breed councils and the kennel club should be kept as much in check as those they talk about ie to keep the price high it benefits breeders not the dogs.I have as mentioned earlier know people that have been in the game for 40 years or more with the ability to name every pup they bred cos there wasnt that many.
There is a minefield out there around the dog game , everyone blames someone , yet the dogs are really those that take the blame , and I have always found that those that shout the loudest about the kindness to animals have them out back in kennels without human contact.
A couple of years ago I suggested a thing called a breeders code of practice to the sbt fraternity and it was frowned upon becuase it kept those at the top in check like everyone else , just now they are trying to get it up and running but guess whom it will benefit ....only the show breeder and not the dogs or their buyers.
When you consider that the governing body (the kennel club) itself is not practicing its OWN ethics code then its monkey see.....monkey do.0
