Double glazing quote

Options
Hi,

Just had a quote from weatherseal:

4 x "imitation sash" white upvc casement. 3 medium size one larger living room window.
1 x v.small bathroom window

£4000

Seems a bit much to me ignoring the tiny bathroom window basically £1k per frame. Big company 30 year guarentee and pilkingtons self cleaning glass but still alot. I told the guy it was more than I was expecting. I said I was thinking more like £2k for the lot. He didnt even try to come down on price however and basically just walked out taking his brocures with him!! Not the greatest salesman. Quite shocked he didnt even budge on price though.

What do you think? Ill try and get a few more quotes to compare.

  • Way too much.Try smaller local firms. They are always cheaper and usually have better service than the big boys.

I suspected as much, Ive arranged for a few companies from the local paper to quote me.

    A couple of questions though:

Its a victorian terrace and although the sash windows are long gone it does have quite attractive gerogian bar windows fitted, do many firms do these in UPVC? I mean as actually part of the frame rather than the bit of trim they stick in between the glass which looks a bit naff to me. A neighbour has them so they must exist but are they massively more expensive?

What sort of interior damage can I expect? One worry I have is there is alot of boxing around the frames internally, I presume the original sash windows had significantly larger frames which has left a recess which has been boxed in, would be quite a mess if the boxing needed to be redone.

    Cheers

For good quality, I would expect to pay about £5-600 per window - size of window actually makes very little difference to cost, there's the same amount of work in constructing the window and the fitting. So I would say for your 5 windows, you'd probably pay between £2500 and £3k

I think georgian bars are almost always done in upvc with internal moulding either with or without external stick on bars over the top. I've seen individual double glazed panes on wooden windows, but not on upvc. I would imagine they would up the cost quite a bit because each pane would have to be its own little sealed unit.

Before my neighbour had them all the georgian bars Ive seen are the bit of trim they place in between the glass panes, looks ok from approx 10m away but very tacky when you get closer. The neighbouring house definately has brown UPVC georgian bars as part of the frame, theyre not stick on bits as i can see the edge of the window panes. So I guess they were quite expensive, I actually wouldnt mind a stick on outer trim but I havent seen any like that.

  • You can get a trim that sticks on the surface of the glass.I have some kicking around somewhere.

I have never seen upvc windows that are made like timber georgian ones.I'm not saying they don't exist but if they did i suspect they will be expensive. What you can get is engineered timber windows with a coloured plastic coating on them.I think a firm called Anderson produce them.
  • Wrong spelling. It's Andersen and they do several styles and colours.Google them and have a look.

    Another quote:

4 x four glass panel push open from top white UPVC "sash style"
    1 x small bathroom window

10 year non insurance backed warrenty + fensa install certificates.

    £2428

Long established local firm with a good reputation. I didnt try to negotiate on price I just told him Ive got a few more yet to quote, the guy said "some may be cheaper but ours are very high quality" "You wont hear from me again, call me if you want to go ahead 2% cash discount"

Seems good, although I dont like the idea of taking the first price with no negotiation. Surely no-one pays the asking price for windows?

    Cheers

  • You do if the price is right.I have a mate who owns a uPVC company and he operates the same way.Gives a price, doesn't pressure, doesn't negotiate. If you want it doing, give me a ring is his modus operandi and he has been trading 20 odd years.

Another quote, again a long established local firm.

5 x white UPVC "kommerlung?" brand windows. Plain design at the back and with the stick on georgian trim for the front ones.

£1690 or £1300 without the trim.

Seems a good price, but it depends on how this stick on trim looks I think. They have an example in the showroom Im going to take a look at, has anyone seen this sort of window? Do they look good or is it obviously a stuck on trim effect?

    Cheers

    Andy
  • As i say i have some kicking around somewhere.Yes it does look like stuck on stuff but mine is old.New products are coming out all the time and may be better than i remember.Kommerling is a respected brand and at the end of the day,PVC windows are a compromise anyway.Proper timber georgian would cost you a small fortune.
